to fall in love

A clumsy boy was stumbling in the street
upon the winks and teasing trials of love
when softly like a passing spell of snow
a girl came by to trip across his path.
What followed was a tangled mash of legs,
a bruising thump of skin on concrete ground
and strands of hair that caught on fingertips
to pluck at things they didn't know they had.
A string of sorry's tumbled from her mouth;
his voice lay cracked in pieces in the grass.
Then, swiping at the blood that trickled down
her dusty palms, his muscled calves, their lips,
they limped away to treat their newfound hearts.
