Okay, so here’s a story I’m writing with my friend Georgia. Every odd chapter’s mine, every even’s hers.
Disclaimer - I don’t own Richard Mccaw
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” groaned Reya, tilting her head back.
“I’m sorry Reya but you seem unable to keep up with the expectations of the company.”
“Come on, I’ve been on the job three weeks! That’s a record for me. I thought I was doing well.”
“You come into work late, you barely work when you’re here and you expect us to just let you stay?”
“That’s what I was hoping,” she mumbled.
Sighing in exasperation, her boss dropped to his seat.
“Look,” she tried. “I really need the money. I’m sixteen, I’ve dropped out of school, I live alone so I have to pay the rent, cook, okay, maybe not cook… or even clean to a great extent but… well… I really need this job.”
“Reya, we can’t afford to keep you on as a staff member. You’re too unreliable.”
This was the fifth time she’d heard that statement in the past two months… from five different bosses.
“Whatever,” she stated, standing and striding from the building.
--
Grumbling to herself, Reya stalked through the city for about fifteen minutes before reaching the building she was searching for. Vet.
Pushing open the door with her shoulder, Reya shuffled in, her head bowed. Making her way to the desk, she rang the small bell.
“I’ll be right out!” came a muffled voice from the back room. Reya instantly recognised it as her friend’s.
“How can I he- Reya, aren’t you supposed to be at work?”
When Reya didn’t answer, Georgia guessed correctly.
“You got fired, huh?”
“I might’ve,” she mumbled.
“Reya,” sighed her friend, walking to the other side of the desk to put an arm around the raven-haired girl’s shoulder. “You’ve got to be a bit more responsible. This is the fifth job you’ve lost this year… and it’s February.”
“Yeah… but…” she trailed off lamely. “I don’t have time?” she tried.
“Reya, I work here as a volunteer, I also go to night school and have a pretty secure future in netball. You can’t tell me you don’t have time.”
“I just did though.”
Georgia sighed. “You need a job.”
“Can you just give me a lift home?” Reya mumbled.
“Not right now. My shift doesn’t end until five and it’s currently,” Georgia glanced at her watch. “Eight.”
Sighing, Reya slumped against the desk.
“Can I hang around ‘til then?”
“Sure… but make yourself useful. Man the desk and if anyone comes in just ring the bell, ‘kay?”
Reya nodded enthusiastically. “Not even I can screw this up, right?”
Georgia looked doubtful but proceeded to return to the back of the building where she had been earlier.
The day slowly dragged on with Reya only falling asleep at the desk once… or so.
The bell suddenly chimed as the door was open. Reya’s head shot up, shooting a quick glance at the clock. Seven. Almost there.
“How can I help you?” she drawled, standing and leaning against the desk.
“Hi,” he replied, flashing a smile that would have melted Georgia instantly.
“Yeah, hi, what can I do for you?”
“Yeah, uh, I’m just here to pick up my dog, I brought him in here a short while ago.”
“Ah, yes, of course.” Reya quickly hit the bell.
Nothing.
She rang it again… Still nothing.
“Could you just hold on for one moment?” she asked quickly. “I’ll just go around the back.”
Forcing a smile, she swung around and through the doorway.
“Georgia, get your ass out here,” she hissed.
“It’s him,” she heard Georgia’s voice from the small peephole that allowed you to view the foyer from the back room.
“It’s who? Oh, well, whoever it is, he wants his dog.”
“That si Richard Mccaw.”
“Really?” she drawled. “Who’s Richard Mccaw?”
“Richard Mccaw!” cried Georgia incredulously.
“Yeah, I know his name but why are you practically drooling?”
“He’s, like the key player in our team!”
“Our team?”
“Yes! Rugby!”
“Which team!”
“The New Zealand team. Our team! The All Blacks.”
“Ah… We have a team do we?”
Georgia sighed in exasperation. “Look, I can’t go out there. I’m going to give you the dog, you’re going to have to take it out to him.”
“But-“
“Reya, you have to do this.”
“Whatever, okay, where’s pooch?”
Georgia grinned and vanished around a corner before returning with a massive black Labrador.
“Here he is.”
“Ah, alrighty then… Onward.”
Taking the leash from Georgia, Reya stepped back out into the foyer.
“Would this be the requested canine?” she asked stupidly.
Mccaw grinned. “That would be him.”
“Then I hand your pooch over to you, yeah?” she asked, stepping from behind the desk and tossing Richard the leash.
“Hey, uh, Georgia, give me a hand with this will you?” she yelled suddenly.
There was a sudden crashing in the backroom and Georgia shuffled out, looking flustered.
“Georgia?” asked Richard suddenly.
Georgia looked up. “Yeah, that’s me.”
“The netballer right?”
“Hey… yeah.”
“How old are you?”
“Uh, seventeen,” she answered nervously.
“And you play for the Silver Ferns?” he continued incredulously.
She laughed shortly. “Yeah.”
“Not only,” cut in Reya. “Is she the youngest player the Silver Ferns has ever had, last year, she was runner up for the fairest and best.”
“Reya!” whispered Georgia.
“Yeah, I know, I was there,” replied Richard.
“And you got the fairest and best,” added Georgia.
He shrugged. “Old news.”
Reya did a silent calculation. Mccaw was like… five years older than Georgia… eww.
“So, uh, you free tonight,” asked Reya. “‘cause Georgia and I are hitting town for dinner, you wanna join us?”
A smile lit up Georgia’s face.
“She’s melting,” muttered Reya. “Right there in front of him. How embarrassing.”
“Yeah, I’ll come.”
Reya flicked her red streaked hair over a shoulder. “All set then.”
--
“Richard Mccaw and I are like… friends!” exclaimed Georgia the moment she closed the door to her apartment.
“I think he wants a little bit more than friendship,” baited Reya.
Georgia ignored her. “What should I wear though?”
“Please something,” Reya replied, striding to the kitchen and grubbing a tub of ice cream and spoon.
“Put that away.”
“I’m hungry.”
“There’s some fruit in the fridge.”
Reya scoffed. “Like I’m gonna eat that,” she replied, digging the spoon into the frozen cream.
“What am I supposed to wear though?”
Reya rolled her eyes. It was just clothes.
--
“What if he’s not coming,” muttered Georgia wringing her hands. “What if he decided tha-“
“Would it really hurt you to shut up?” asked Reya, irritated. “It’s five to seven, we agreed to meet here at seven.”
“Yeah, but…” muttered Georgia, slumping in the chair beside Reya.
“Oh look, there he is now.”
Georgia leapt up at her friend’s words.
“Just kidding.”
Georgia glared at Reya before crossing her arms and sitting heavily back into the chair.
“What if he can’t find us?”
“We’re in a restaurant, Georgia. He’s going to be able to find us.”
“Don’t jump this time but he’s here,” muttered Reya.
“No he’s not,” argued Georgia.
“No what?” came a deep voice from behind Georgia as Reya raised an eyebrow.
“’course he’s not.”
“So, you guys ready to order?” asked Reya simply.
“Uh, yeah, sure,” answered both in unison.
“Alrighty then.”
--
“Reya, that guy in the corner’s staring at you,” murmured Georgia.
“Oh really?” Reya asked, her eyes not lifting from her fork.
“She’s right,” added Richie.
“You guys serious?” she asked, surprised. They both nodded.
Frowning, she risked a glance over her shoulder. Sure enough, sitting alone in a corner was indeed a guy who seemed to be forcing himself to look distracted by the ceiling.
“Him?” she asked turning back around to face the others.
Another round of nods.
“What does he look like?” asked Reya. “I don’t want to keep turning around.”
“Black hair,” began Georgia.
“Grey eyes,” continued Richie.
“Ooh, tall.”
“Looks like he’s got a bit of muscle too.”
“Really hot.”
Reya smirked as she saw Mccaw’s face darken a little at Georgia’s comment.
“Go an talk to him,” prodded Georgia.
“But you guys will miss me, no?”
Georgia shrugged. “We’ll survive… go!”
Wrinkling her nose, Reya stood, striding towards the corner table.
“Hey,” she began, sitting down.
He grinned. “Hey.”
“Uh, Georgia told me you were staring at me.”
He suddenly bowed his head.
“Hey, I’m good with it.”
His face lit up at the comment.
“Reya,” she said in introduction, extending a hand.
“Aidyn,” he replied, taking it.
“Well Aidyn, would you care to join us for dinner…” she paused for a moment, turning around to see Georgia and Mccaw talking happily. “Actually I think we had better leave them.”
“Is that Richard Mccaw?” asked Aidyn suddenly.
“Something like that. Georgia said he plays Rugby or something.”
“Yeah, he’s like, the best in New Zealand.”
“Well I’d say it’s lucky we live in New Zealand then. We have Mccaw on our team… not that I even follow rugby… or any sport at all.”
Aidyn chuckled. “Me neither. My mate does though and he’s fully into the All Blacks.”
“That was the name of the team! Yeah, Georgia’s pretty into it to but a bit more into netball. She plays for the Silver Ferns.”
“Really?” asked Aidyn, clearly shocked. “How old is she?”
“Seventeen,” replied Reya smugly. “And she won runner up for fairest and best last year too.”
“But hey, enough on them, more on you. How old are you? If you don’t mind me asking.”
“Nah, not at all. Um, I’m just sixteen, you?”
“I’m eighteen next week.”
“Well happy birthday for then,” she smirked.
Grinning, he continued. “Saying it now? That mean you’re not gonna be around for it?”
“Maybe,” she teased, leaning forward.
A small pout formed on his face.
“Come on, if you get boring you can’t expect me to stick around now can you?” she chided, only half joking.
“Seriously, you don’t look like the sort of chick that would hang around if you got bored.”
Reya smirked. “Well you got that right.”
“So, do you want to play 20 personal questions?”
“Sure, why not. You start.”
“Alright… uh, what do you spend your time doing?”
“Skateboarding, playing practical jokes on everyone, getting fired from countless jobs, that sort of stuff.”
“How many jobs have you been fired from?”
“This year? Five.”
“Whoa.”
“Okay, what do you do when you’re bored?”
“Take a drive… How many boyfriends have you had?”
“Umm…” Reya tried to think back. “Heaps… like, thirty or something.”
Aidyn looked a little shocked.
“But I never seriously liked any of them, it was more for the fun of it and they lasted a couple of weeks at tops. Okay… uh, how many people you slept with?”
Aidyn looked shocked once more. Clearly this chick didn’t waste her time. “Four,” he answered. “Same question to you.”
“None.”
“Really?”
--
“Tell me a bit about you?” asked Richie.
“Umm… I was born here in Auckland and have lived here all my life. I’m seventeen.”
Mccaw cringed a little as she stated her age. Five years…
“I work as a volunteer at the vet,” she continued. “I go to night school, I’m studying physics but most of my life is based on netball, really.”
He really shouldn’t be falling for this girl… not when he was twenty-to… and she was seventeen. He should never have agreed to go out to dinner with them. But when the other girl had asked, he couldn’t help but say ‘yes’.
“Tell me about you.”
“Well, I’ve loved rugby for… as long as I can remember and have always wanted to play it. I’ve broken practically every bone in my body…” he trailed off. Five years?
“Who’s up for dessert?” a sudden yell sounded from the corner where Reya sat. Trust her to be polite.
Georgia glanced at Richie who nodded. Dessert it was then.
