Not Really a Tourist

Penned by Schinn-Sama

Just a random encounter with a waitress at a diner. True story.

-Thanks for catching a certain typo, Nostril Raping Drummer.

-------

"Would you like more tea?"

I looked up from my paper at the apron the girl was wearing before it occurred to me I had to raise something other than my eyes to see the waitress. I did so and held out my mug. "Yes, please, thank you."

She tilted the glass pot and poured more tea into my mug. I'd have to add more sugar to it when she left so it reached the consistency I wanted. Thick and sweet. I could feel her look at me when she finished pouring the hot tea.

"So what brings you to this neck of the woods? You're obviously not from around here."

"You could tell?" I brought the mug to my lips and blew on the surface before taking a small sip. Yum, freshly brewed pekoe.

"The way you said your thanks."

"Ah, my accent must be slipping in." Better learn to reign that sucker in, I thought.

"It's very pretty. Are you from London?"

Ah, hell. "Me? Oh, no. I've just had a fairly large European influence as a child."

"I see."

Well, better being that than being called a bloody New Yorker, blasted yanks.

"Would you like to order anything else? Can I interest you in a muffin or cookie?"

"I'll take a biscuit, if you have them." I tilted my head slightly and gave her a look that generally scared my co-workers. A kind of pleading innocence, they called it. Heh, my brother would die laughing if he could see this.

"We do, fresh baked." A small flush coloured her cheeks and I had to suppress a grin. Never was good at that, but I kept it in check.

"I'll take two, please. Thank you kindly." I turned back to my paper and hoped she would leave me alone.

"Would you like some jelly or butter?"

"Butter will do, thank you."

I didn't even look at her this time.

"I'll bring it out to you."

"Thank you." Now go away, I thought. She left and I quickly slipped my headphones on. I only had some mindless flash music on my minidisk, but it should keep my ears occupied.

If only for a little while.
