Prologue
“It’s time,” he murmured as he appeared suddenly into the room. I knew he’d be here tonight. I gave a hallow nod. This was it then. This was my chance to choose my path. One was a dead end, literally. The other was a chance to live forever, at the cost of other people’s lives.
He approached me, eyes narrowed and thoughtful. “You aren’t about to choose death, are you?” he asked incredulously.
There was a pause in which I thought all this over. I hardly was alive now. Why not? I’d always been practical, and this was my chance to do something that could be completely reckless. Besides, it’s not like I was going to have anything to look forward to in death.
“No,” I choked in a weak, pathetic voice.
“Close your eyes.”
His fangs sunk gently into my throat.
