The pain dispersed almost as quickly as it had started and soon she felt as if she was free again, as if she had just gotten out of constricting clothes and could finally breath again.

Run…Bite…Hide…

Those were the only messages her brain seemed to be able to reach to the rest of her body, all her logic and reason escaped her. Instincts had evicted her normally rational thoughts and replaced them with an animalistic need to survive and whatever cost necessary, but still she tried her hardest to summon her senses of logic and reason. She studied her surroundings much more for just some small opening to make an escape from.

Her efforts would have all been in vain if it weren’t for the moon light coming through the window hitting the rust of on the cage bars just right. May evaluated the state of the rust and hypothesized that her now powerful legs would be just enough to kick the bar in and allow herself to escape quietly and without arousing the attention of the hungry creatures that captured her (although, in her current state, she wouldn’t turn down a confrontation).

As she expected, it took two strong kicks with her legs to break through the bars. The repercussions from such a move was a scratched up leg that was now bleeding, but it was a small price to pay for freedom. She noticed that the room her cage was in was empty. It appeared the room was used strictly for storage and had not seen signs of care in quite some time. She did not want to leave the room out of fear of what would be behind it, but it appeared as if the room had no other routes of escape, until she looked up at the ceiling.

Above her was a broken part of the ceiling that revealed rafter beams that could allow her to crawl through the ceilings undetected and could get out of the house and back to safety. She piled a bunch of crates nearby up to the ceiling and began to climb. She had no problem jumping up to the beams from just a few stacked crates with thanks to her powerful back paws and once she was balanced, she began her escape route.

She crawled through the rafters with slight clumsiness, careful not to break the ceiling and reveal herself leaving drops of blood stained into the wood behind her. She looked through any available holes to navigate herself to an exit or entrance.

After some exploration of the building and required backtracking, she was hit with a sheer stroke of luck, a small hole that revealed a room that appeared to be in the back of the building that had a door leading to outside. She also saw that there were two wolves conversing in the room, playing what appeared to be a card game on an old decrepit table.

Evaluating her choices at this point was not promising. She could listen to her reason, which told her that killing was wrong and she could spend the rest of her days in the ceiling slowly decaying. Another choice was to listen to her instincts and kill the wolves that seemed almost like innocent by standards, escape, but live with the guilt and of course her last choice was to be eaten by her hunters. Either way, nothing was promising to her, but she decided to survive and deal with the consequences later.

She gave another swift kick and broke the ceiling below her and landed on her feet, standing on the floor below. This bewildered the two wolves but they did not become distracted from letting out a low growl and approaching her, preparing to kill her. As they approached she took a breath and let her instincts force her body to run on autopilot. She dived under the two wolves and proceeded to insert her claws into the back of their legs, causing them to be lowered down on their knees in pain.

“Y-you bitch!” one of the wolves yowled in pain

May then delivered her first final blow and sunk her teeth into the creature’s neck. At the same time, the other wolf, a small female pounced on her back in an attempt at pulling May off of his neck, only succeeding in forcing the ripping of the poor creatures throat out. May managed to flip the wolf onto her back and May stood over her, her mouth stained with blood. She once again sunk her overgrown incisors into the neck of the wolf, killing her moments after releasing the grip of her teeth.

May was now covered in blood, a shameful feeling once her senses returned to her. She didn’t dare to look behind her at the product of her work, but she instead ran out the door as quickly as her legs could carry her, which now was quite an impressive speed for a girl her size.

She luckily recognized the area in which she was taken to. It was quite a hike to get her back to her familiar surroundings that she called home, but she knew she didn’t want to stick around for what was next and the only thing that seemed to matter to her for unknown reasons, was running.

After two hours of running and another two of walking concealed among wooded areas and abandoned trails, May finally reached the all-familiar dim streets of her home. She smiled as she wearily stumbled to the side of the old house and to the entrance to her apartment home. Luckily she possessed enough strength to return to her human form before anyone noticed. She knocked on the door, as her purse and groceries were long gone from her possession and Carrie opened the door, shocked and frightened by her friends battered and blood stained appearance

“May! What happened to you?!” she asked alarmingly

“…I dropped the beer” she simply replied as she stumbled in the door

Carrie confusedly stepped aside, allowing her friend to collapse in the old squashy armchair before speaking again

“geez, and I thought I looked like shit tonight! I went for a walk earlier to clear my head and some stupid animal gave me a huge gash on my arm near the woods close to here...I guess i spooked it”

May turned her head, her face looking white beneath her red stains.

She could only hope this wasn’t a sick example of Murphy’s Law.
