Chapter 1

“Jean, where are they? They were supposed to be here an hour ago,” Carolina complained, to her older sister, as she flipped her brown hair off her shoulders.

“I don’t know, maybe their car broke down,” Jean said, bored, resting her head on her hand.

“Why can’t you guys admit they aren’t coming?” I questioned, from where I sat at the table across from Jean. As you can tell, I am the only one boyfriendless. “You guys, is it always going to be like this?”

“What?” Jean and Carolina asked together, stopping their scan of the bar to look at me.

“Are you guys just going to throw your life away for some guy? How can you even know they’re the right one? You’ve been with thousands of guys over the last hundred years, how do you know one of them wasn’t ‘the one’?” I spewed.

“Oh, I forgot you don’t believe in looking for the right one,” Carolina retorted. I turned away from them, looking around the bar.

“Vivian, you can’t keep doing this. One of these days you’re going to wake up and find that the guy you should have fallen in love with was dead,” Jean said.

“Sorry Jean, that’s already happened, remember thirty years ago?” I reminded her.

“Viv, he was human, he would never have been able to keep up with you. And how do you know he was the one?” Jean asked.

“I just do,” I said, taking a sip of my beer.

“Viv, it’s hanging out in places like this that make you unable to find the guy you are supposed to be with,” Caroline said.

I opened my mouth to answer, but Jean cut me off. “There they are. Ow, and it looks like they brought you a friend, Viv,” Jean said, glancing over at me. I looked over at the group of boys coming toward us. Seeing the dark haired Angel, I rolled my eyes and took another drink of my beer.

“I’ll see you guys at home,” I said to Jean and Carolina.

“Oh no you won’t, you’re staying,” William said, grabbing my shoulders and steering me back into my seat.

“But I don’t really have to stay,” I countered.

“Neither do they but they are,” William answered.

“Are these people bothering you?” the bouncer, from the door, asked, coming up to me. I smiled sweetly at him, then turned back to the others and smiled evilly at them. I was about to tell the bouncer that they were but then I saw the Angel’s eyes. They were a strange color for an angel, most angels had dark eyes, in shades of black and brown, but his were a slate blue.

“No, Jake, not this time, but thanks,” I said, barely turning my head back to the bouncer, still watching the angel.

“See, now you didn’t have to draw attention,” William said, leading me back to my spot, which that had ‘conveniently’ moved to in front of the angel. Great, they’re trying to set me up with someone Leo will want dead. Leo was my adopted father.

“So, what have you girls been up to today?” Kyle said, putting his arm around Carolina.

“Can’t you just read their minds to figure it out?” I said, challengingly, smirking. Kyle was a mind reader, immortal. Kyle glanced over at me, disinterested, the looked back at Carolina.

“You were right, her being alone wasn’t good for her,” Kyle whispered in her ear, just a little too loud.

“I’m going home,” I said, getting up and starting toward the door.

“Viv, he didn’t mean it,” Jean called after me. I didn’t even bother to turn around, or stop, I just kept walking toward the door.

Outside, I ran over to my dark green Kia Optima. I sat in my car for a while, staring out the front window. I was afraid that if I started the car I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from driving it through Kyle’s garage at his house. He deserves to have his garage destroyed, and maybe his pretty new silver BMW Series Coupe too. Yeah, I could put a nice big dent in his car.

Just then they walked out laughing and talking, cutting off my string of evil schemes. I watched them for a minute until they noticed my car. I swiftly looked away, off into space. I know the windows of my car were tinted then, but they were only tinted to humans. For every one of them it was like looking through air.

I few minutes later there was a knock on the driver’s side window of my car. I glanced out the window and saw Jean standing there.

I opened the door. I looked out at her.

“What?” I asked, sounding madder than I thought I was.

“Are you okay?” Jean asked, watching me.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I answered.

“You know wrecking Julian’s car won’t solve you being mad at Kyle,” She explained softly.

“Whose car?”

“The Angel’s,” Jean clarified.

“I didn’t know it was his car,” I answered.

“Yeah, I didn’t think so, but Kyle’s really mad at you,” She stated.

“For what? I didn’t do anything,” I said. Now I was pissed. I got out of my car and walked over to Kyle. “What’s your problem?” I shouted at him.

“What?” Kyle said, he was caught by surprise cause he hadn’t been able to read my mind fast enough.

“You get mad at me for THINKING about totaling a car I thought was yours, but you don’t get mad about the part where I was going to destroy half your house. And what gave you the idea that it was okay for you to read my mind in the first place?” I shouted at him.

“You have been nothing but a bitch since I met you. I knew it was stupid of us to try and set you up but no, Will had to try anyway. At least now we know never to try and help you anymore,” Kyle shouted back at me. I took a step away from him. “What, you just going to back down?” he growled at me, showing his fangs. I took a few more steps away from him, knowing he was about four times stronger than I was.

“Dude, just let her go,” William said to Kyle.

“Hey, whose side are you on?” Kyle retorted, taking a step toward William.

“Viv, take Jean and Carolina and go,” William said, watching Kyle carefully.

“Kay,” I answered, started toward my car. Jean, Carolina and I piled into my car and just sat there for a moment.

“How can you talk to her like that? There used to be a time when you would do anything for her to yell at you. You used to think it was cute remember? What happen to that?” William asked.

“Simple, she cheated on me,” Kyle spat.

“She didn’t cheat on you, you cheated on her,” William said. “And she for gave you. I can’t believe Jean let you date her little sister.”

“Vivian’s always been a spoiled bitch. I can’t remember what I even saw in her.”

“I can remember a few that you wouldn’t let the rest of us forget,” Will said, irritated. “Personality, makes you laugh, fun, and of course the one you wouldn’t shut up about… She’s so smokin’ hot.”

At that point I started my car and drove away from the parking lot.

“Viv, Are you okay,” Jean asked when she noticed I was driving way too fast.

“Fine, just fine,” I said through my teeth. It was quiet for the rest of the drive to their house.

We had just pulled into their driveway when Jean’s cell phone rang.

“Hello?” Jean said as she answered the phone. “Oh, hi Will… Yeah… We’re at my house… She hasn’t left yet… I won’t… Okay, bye,” she hung up the phone and glanced over at me. “They’re going to be here in like five minutes,” she let us know.

“Okay, I’ll see you guys tomorrow then,” I said closing my door and starting to back out.

“Wait, you’re going to hit Snickers!” Jean said frantically. I slammed the brakes. Snickers was Jean’s little terrier. I opened my door and got out, leaving my keys in the ignition. I went to make sure that Snickers was okay.

As I reached the back of the car Jean leaned in and took my keys. I went back and sat in the front seat, the door still open. I had been tricked into staying again, and this time I didn’t have my keys.

The silver BMW pulled up, parking on the road.

“Hey, where’s Kyle?” Carolina asked as William and Julian got out of the car.

“I don’t know, we left him at the club,” William said, walking over and giving Jean a hug.

“Jean, can I have my keys back now?” I asked after William let go of her.

“You fell for the dog thing again?” William laughed.

“Watch it,” I said, glaring at him but not meanly. “So can I have them back?”

“No,” Jean said, smiling.

“Why not?” I questioned.

“Because you’ll leave,” Jean said.

“So, it’s my car, I can leave if I want to,” I answered.

“You can’t leave because what if Kyle comes back… Who will we have to bite his head off?” Jean asked.

“Will seemed to do a pretty good job, and I’m sure Carolina could if she wanted to,” I paused and thought for a second, thinking. “Come to think of it… I’ve never heard you yell at anyone before,” I said, turning to Carolina. “And I bet you’ve never been cheated on before either…” I thought about it for another second. “Yeah, I think I’m going to have to stay. One of these days you’re going to want to break up with Kyle and you don’t want to get pounded into the ground.” I grabbed her arm and started toward the house, the others following close behind.

“Okay, to start, I’ve noticed that you’ve been taking all of Kyle’s crap like he was complimenting you. So that’s got to stop. If you do that then any guy will be able to walk all over you, which ends with you being cheated on,” I looked over at Carolina, who was sitting on her bed. She wore a shocked face. “Hey, don’t look so surprised, it’s true.”

“Yeah, and only Viv would know that… so listen close as she tells you how to get a big womping mind reading enemy,” William said.

“Anyway,” I said, ignoring him. “That will all happen once you know how to yell at someone and mean it. So to start, you imagine Kyle cheated on you, what do you do?”

“Um… ignore him and get over it,” Carolina said softly.

“No! You make them wish that they had never messed with you,” I said exasperated.

“Yeah, like totaling his car,” Jean said from where she sat against the wall.

“But then he’ll call me…”

“It doesn’t matter what they call you. And I wasn’t going to total his car,” I said, stealing a glance over toward Julian.

“And don’t you think you should be teaching her how to deal with a guy, not get her heart broken to a thousand pieces over and over again till there’s nothing left?” Jean said.

“Well, when you describe my love life like that you make it sound like it was a bad thing,” I said, smirking.

“Viv, what happened to the girl I used to double date with?” Jean asked.

“Her heart was stomped out,” I said smirking again.

“Not funny Viv,” Jean said, watching me. “And it’s been awhile now hasn’t it, hasn’t the girl’s heart had time to regenerate some?”

“Sorry, Jean, I’m not an angel like you, mine doesn’t do that,” I said, lying sideways on her bed, my head sinking into a pink mooshi pillow.

“I was just thinking, since your sense of humor came back, that maybe…”

“Sense of humor is an Angel and a Demon trait,” I answered.

“But Demon’s always seem to have a cruel evil sense of humor,” Jean replied.

“Hey!”

“Let me finish,” Jean said.

“Fine.”

“But you’ve always seemed to be more Angel like in that sense,” Jean explained.

“Are you sure you’re not part Angel, Vivian?” William asked.

“You already saw my proof,” I said, holding up my wrist.

“I haven’t though,” Carolina said. My light lavender eyes flicked to her.

“But it hurts,” I whined.

“Then how do I know you’re not part Angel?”

“You trust Will and Jean,” I answered.

“But…”

“Come on Viv,” Jean said. “Just let us show her.”

“But it…”

“Come on it doesn’t hurt that much,” Jean said.

“Says the Angel,” I answered under my breath as I got up. I sat down on the floor as William, Julian and Carolina came over.

“Give me your wrist,” Jean said, holding out her hand. I hesitated before setting my wrist in her hand. Jean pressed down hard on my wrist in several places, trying to find it. I just sat there relaxed. Sure, it hurt, but if she had the right wrist it would hurt more, and eventually she would realize she had the wrong one. William and Julian were trying not to laugh, it wasn’t working really well. “What?” Jean asked, looking up at them.

“You, um, have the wrong wrist,” William said. Jean turned to me, glaring. I smiled sweetly.

“Oops, I guess I forgot which one it was on,” I said, in a fake, sweet little girl voice. Jean held out her hand, not saying anything. I gave her my other wrist, it being suddenly more tense. My free hand tightened around a pillow that had fallen off the bed. Jean pressed down, hitting the mark on her first try. I cried out in pain. Seconds later I felt a hand close over my mouth.

“Don’t you dare bite me,” William said in my ear. He knew I probably wouldn’t be able to hear him.

Jean removed her hand a few minutes later, as William’s dropped away from my mouth. I was breathing hard and looked at my hand. Jean held up my wrist for Carolina to see.

“See, full Demon,” Jean said.

“Then why is there blue in the circle?” William asked.

“What?” Jean turned my wrist toward her and gasped.
