call me a spinster, if you will,

for that us what I am,

if indeed you are one to use

that horrendously outdated terminology

but as the great Playwright once said:

what’s in a name?

if I am myself and whole,

unbroken and free and

not tied down by a man,

what else does our domineering

patriarchal society see?

hesitate when looking for an answer from a man

rather, seek that of a woman and find

that We are privileged and content

with our single status and don’t

have to measure up to standards that

the other half has preordained for us
