"Brain Cells"

my night has just begun
and it will not end so soon
in fact i'll probably get to sleep
sometime tomorrow around noon
and with most day sleepers
all my dreams consist of light
so i can only pull down the shades
in hopes to imitate the night

from the time i wake up
to the time i go to bed
thoughts of socialistic conversation
tend to drain inside my head
along with the blood tissue
that decides it wants to share the rent
write your check out to my brain cells
'cause my heart is emotionally spent

they ask what's going on
and they ask how do you do?
i'd love to say "i'm fine"
but i recoil with "if you only knew"
'cause my bed is now made
and i lay in it with care
but if it breaks from my baggage
do you happen to have a spare?

i hate asking for handouts
like a heart with a pumping soul
don't take it from a cheater
'cause i ain't playing the asshole role
but i lost that handy checkbook
i'm not sure where the rent check went
just make it out to my brain cells
'cause my heart is emotionally spent
