You called me over,
For a saved seat in the far back corner near the windows.
The wind blew in lightening the muggy temperature just a little bit
We were comfortable enough.
You reached your hand below the back of the chair
And rubbed my back gently
With only a finger or two, just a touch.
And you laughed at the jokes your friends were making
Putting in your comment here and there
But you kept your hand there.
And if you moved,
It was only for a moment or two
Where you copied down the assignment to
Pretend you were actually paying attention,
Maybe tapping my shoulder or playing with my hair too.
When you started conversation
It was over a never-ending game of hangman.
I leaned in your direction to play along
With my arms crossed before you.
And you’d stretch your left arm out so it reached my arm
Using only your right to spell out the letters
Do you believe in magic?
And you’d look at me
As you tried to figure out the words.
With only two fingers you’d touch me gently
Just as before, we were comfortable enough.
I could.
