Prologue

Twilight jumped the rooftops of the busy New York City. Her stylish, yet stealthy, black halter-midriff with a lighter, see-through long-sleeved shirt underneath, pants, gloves, heeled boots that made practically no noise, and black mask that only showed her intense green eyes and stopped just above lightly glossed full lips made her nearly invisible in the nighttime. Her long, blonde braid beat against her back from the speed she was going.

“There it is,” she whispered as she got to her destination. Before her was a huge campus that was Jacobs High School. She was starting her freshman year there tomorrow. Of course she wasn't going as Twilight the Thief. Oh no. That would be stupid. She was going under her real name—Rayne Price.

She smiled when she remembered Serena, her guardian who was practically her mother, had reacted when Twilight told her she wanted to go to a real high school since she had been home schooled elementary through junior high.

“Rayne Miranda Twilight Price! Are you out of your mind?” Serena had said. “You are a thief! Not a petty little school girl.”

“Come on, Serena!” Twilight begged. “I've been home schooled since I was five. I'm turning fifteen next month. I think I can handle going to a regular high school.”

“You could blow your cover. If someone found out you were the Twilight Thief...” Serena sighed. “I don't want you to get arrested. You are the second best female thief in the world. You have a future, Twilight. I don't want you to throw that away just to go to a regular school.”

“Serena, I'm not going to tell anyone I'm the Twilight Thief. And I doubt they'll figure it out.”

“What if you make friends? Not that that's a bad thing. Except when they want to come over here! You can't bring them to the Eclipsed Fortress!” Eclipse Thieves was the group of thieves who only did their work at night. It was the group Twilight and Serena (known as Sunset there) belonged to. The Fortress was what they called their huge home.

“Then I won't bring them here.” Twilight rolled her eyes. “I can handle this. I know it. If I can take on twenty guards at once, I think I can take this.”

Serena had finally given in to Twilight's pleasure. But she had to swear she would never talk about the Eclipse Thieves or anything that involved her private life.

“I'm ready for you,” Twilight said, still in a whisper to the high school. “But are you ready for Rayne?”

With that question hanging in the air, Twilight began her way to the Fortress.
