This is a short little legend that I created to go along with a random character I came up with at a bowling ally between 10 and 12 pm. Why a bowling ally? I haven't the slightest; it had no effect really on my design other than giving me lots of time and light to work on it. The design can be found on my deviantart account -(this site won't let me put in the whole thing and keep it so here's my username) Imaginary-Shadow
This legend I created for it was completed within a few days of creating the character; the first half I wrote the next day, the other half I wrote until after 12 last night. I hope it is consistent and not too repetitive. Please read and review!!
Legend of the Soul of the Sky
This legend is a tale that began back when the universe was new, when planets were still forming and nothing was defined. Each planet was given a spirit or two to observe and watch over it.
A lone spirit could be found on a plain little planet, doing and seeing nothing all day. The spirit’s planet did not seem to be advancing very quickly, as even the simplest form of life failed to spring up yet. The spirit waited patiently for something, but the only rewards reaped were moss-covered rocks and some primitive fish. Eventually, the spirit left the planet for a while, curious to discover what was on other planets. The spirit knew life would come in its own time, but wandering in the meantime couldn’t hurt.
The spirit visited many planets, taking time to look at all they had to offer. The spirits of the other planets at times thought it strange for this spirit to be exploring, but all were happy for the company. When the spirit left, a parting gift of a bit of the planet was always bestowed.
The spirit saw many stages of life; some were as yet still with only beasts, while many had advanced societies thriving (of one kind or another). The cultures also differed from another; some had gotten to the point where all was at peace, and everything was beautiful. Others constantly waged war with each other. Some of the spirits had tried helping the people, but had only succeeded in taking a side against another and giving an unfair advantage; while others were treated like gods, but the people seemed to either live in fear or were kept in negligent ignorance.
The spirit saw these and many more in the time it spent away from its home planet. It watched and studied the methods and ways of the other spirits to utilize on its own world, determining what techniques worked best.
Over time, the spirit had gathered more pieces of planets than it could carry efficiently, so the spirit began weaving them together. After a while, a pattern began forming. The spirit was now making new clothes, which made sense as the old ones were showing signs of wear and tear from the long travels.
After a period of time the spirit returned to its humble world; smarter and wiser, as well as having new attire. Needless to say the spirit was delighted to find a society finally manifest itself in the form of villages and kingdoms. The spirit had resolved not to interfere with the planet’s natural progress. But that didn’t mean the spirit wanted nothing to do with the people. It enjoyed watching people smile and laugh, and pleasing in general.
So, after dressing up its clothes a bit with some rays of sunlight, the spirit came down disguised as a traveling jester and magician. The spirit’s talents and disposition found it quite pleased with its occupation, and the spectators loved the performances. The tales the spirit told also gained popularity; of distant lands farther than they could imagine or dream of traveling to, with beings higher than kings or queens ruling over amazing landscapes of beauty and wonder. Some said that they imagined they could see the fantastic places in the many rags of the traveler, but only a few claimed that. If ever asked for a name by which to be referred to, the spirit merely replied, “Call me whatever be pleasing to thy ear, kind sir/madam; I am but a meager jester with a few magic tricks up their sleeve and a wish to bring merriment to all.”
Eventually the spirit became known as the Soul of the Sky, a name which it bore quite well. The dark tone of its skin was said to greatly resemble the night sky; the borders of its clothes were rumored to possess a brilliance almost equal to that of the sun. And when the spirit graced the people with a nightly dance, oh the joy that could be seen! Even the very stars seemed to jump and prance with the animated display, full of gaiety and freedom.
After the name had become quite well-known, the spirit was eventually offered a gift that would neither hamper its travel nor its performance; a beautiful robe that was crafted after its owner’s namesake. On the front right was a rising sun, the background fading lighter as one looked down. On the other side, a rising crescent moon, the last bits of day clinging to the top. The back split into two coattails, with dazzling stars upon them. The night sky served as an appropriate backdrop. A jester’s had with the tree heavenly symbols on metal ends was also bequeathed upon the spirit. The spirit added some more sunlight so as to match its current apparel, and gladly wore them constantly, whilst taking good care of them.
Alas, as is with good things, the simplistic times did not last; a somewhat short time by the spirit’s standards. Soon, the people began asking questions and finding their own answers, exploring and discovering new things and ideas, as well as reforming their ways of thinking. The spirit had left with good enough feelings, wanting to see and enjoy the other parts of the globe. However, when the spirit returned (shortly by the spirit’s orthodox system, as it loved the landscape and people of the particular region), the spirit was slightly disappointed to find that it was no longer very well known; and many were beginning to wish to leave the magic and fantasy of the past behind. Either that or beat it down with religious reformulation.
Saddened by the numerous rejections, the spirit was enlivened whenever it found some personage who wished to be entertained by its extraordinary displays; which unfortunately were growing far and few in-between. The quixotic ideals which the spirit had grown used to and fond of applying were beginning to fade, and with it the belief in beings like the spirit. In time the spirit faded out of the lives and minds of people and into their storybooks. Even then the spirit ultimately became nothing more than a mere legend.
Instead of adapting and changing with the world, the spirit chose to return to the skies above everything, to observe and perhaps vaguely reminisce. After all, if one had a choice in living life the way it is, wouldn’t one take the other choice every now and then? As humans and their civilization grew, the spirit became more reserved. It was disappointed in some of the people’s choices, and would sometimes try to direct them in the right or better way. But the people had grown too busy to take notice of the subtle warnings or hints, too absorbed in their own lives. The spirit still took joy in flying and in seeing a smile, though flying was much easier to achieve. It also continued to wear its garments of past, keeping them in pristine condition. They were a reminder of hearts it had lifted, lives made a bit better with the joy it once spread.
Now, there are few who even know the spirit existed, fewer who know its story. Of course, none ever knew the truth behind the tricks, though a scarce few try.
Is the spirit still around? Did it decide to leave us mortals to our fates and try to start anew? One might assume that. However, if you leave the city, get to where you can truly see the stars at night, ask around. Some locals may tell you that they swore they could’ve seen something shooting among the stars that looked almost like one of them, but yet wasn’t. Or saw a dark shadow at dusk or dawn that seemed to shine with a luminescent glow.
Perhaps, if you were at the right place at the right time, you might catch a glimpse of something yourself.
