Fun fact: The story was almost titled "There's Zombies in the Walmart"
They were all around us now, staring up hungrily. “This is it huh” she giggled insanely, stamping on the hands of those that reached for us. “I never thought it would end like this…” I said lowly.
I was ready to do a rock star type register dive into the crowd of people eaters, when I heard gun fire. One round, then another, and some more. Two men emerged from the cereal isle. They were tall and muscular they wore black vests that were filled with weapons. Their brown hair was tousled full of zombie chunk.
The zombies strode towards them, but without fail the two men hit each one right between the eyes. “Bastards! Time to stay dead!” the taller one shouted. Which in retrospect sounds really corny but at that exact moment it sounded like an angels singing. “Hello ladies, look like ya could use some help” the taller of the two said in a half chuckle.
“No we’re good thanks” I snapped sarcastically. I didn’t mean to but I was annoyed, he was laughing as me and Leane were so close to being eaten.
“Ok then bye” he said waving a hand.
“Wait god cant you take a joke… help please”
The two broke through the waves of zombies, clearing a path for us. He reached up to us. “My lady” he laughed. I braced myself on his shoulder and touched the floor finally. It felt like it had been forever. His slightly shorter counterpart wrapped his arm around me keeping my head down. We walked hastily out toward the back of the store. Leane was right behind with the other man. I was glad to see her at this point our bond had been secured near death does that to people. We’d be sisters forever.
I was surprised by how empty the back of the store was. The only zombies there were lay dead, which I was sure had everything to do with the maniac gunmen who stood beside us. “Who...” Leane whispered. “I’m john” the taller one said “and this is my brother Adam” he pointed to his comrade. “I’m Anne and this is Leane,” I said quickly trying to get rid of the ugly awkwardness. “Are you guys some kind of zombie hunters?!” Adam held a tan hand in front of my face.
“Not now. Get that cart over there and quickly throw in anything edible that wont spoil.” He commanded I started toward the cart but Leane was frozen in front of Adam. “What about the zombies” she said with fear in her voice.
“I’ll be here, don’t worry” he smiled nudging her in my direction.
We grabbed the carts and began tossing in anything our hands touched. The zombies still occupied the front of the building, so long as they had food up there we’d be fine back here. However being, that if it weren’t for bad luck Id have no luck at all, that wouldn’t be the case. The sound came over me washing me with panic. We rushed to Adams side and turned to see them, choking, groaning, dripping blood. They noticed us immediately and picked up their pace. They closed the gap quickly.
“Lets move” john yelled. Without hesitation Leane and I sprinted forward, shoving the full carts along. Adams panicked eyes darted around looking for an exit. The garden center had long been engulfed leaving us without many options. Then it hit me. “The employee lounge” I screamed, remembering the exit door there. The boys let us pass first and followed behind, urging us to go faster. I burst through the door into the very room where I first heard the news, of the outbreak. Adam hurried across the room and grabbed the door handle, but it wouldn’t turn. How could it be locked? what a hazard. I made a mental note to report that violation as soon as we were safe. “The three of you hold the door shut” Adam yelled. We pressed our backs against the cold door. I could hear them choking. Their closeness made me queasy. “THUD” they pushed the door, “THUD” another time. My heart quickened. I heard not only mine but Leane’s as well. I looked over and saw silent mascara filled tears leave messy trails down her white face. Adam was still puzzling over the door. And john was doing some sort of Zen breathing. “THUD” another wave hit. “Just blow the damned thing already!” john screamed straining hard against the door. Adam pulled out a horrifyingly large gun “cover your ears” he called. We looked at each other then back at him. As if reading our minds he said “right holding the door might be more important.” He lifted the barrel and a blast rang out in the small room making it feel 50 times smaller. The exit door flew open. He grabbed the full carts and shoved them through and turned to us. “On three run like hell” he smirked.
“1” Leane breathed deeply
“2” johns tightened himself up
“3” the next few moments were hazy. I could feel my feet moving but I didn’t know why or how. I heard them gaining. “Over there” john called to Leane and I. he pointed to a grey old Cadillac. Adam reached the car first he snapped open the front door and turned the car on. Then he popped the trunk and with incredible strength lifted the shopping carts and dumped their contents. Leane got there next. She stared at him awe struck “damn” she exclaimed.
“I know right” he said smugly
“Not now” john said opening the back door and shoving Leane inside. I reached the car last naturally. I don’t play sports for a reason. John gave me a good shove inside, and before I knew it john and Adam were in the front seat. The car roared to life. The tires squealed as we sped out of the parking lot. The zombies were no where near fast enough. I turned in my seat to find them fading away to nothing behind them.
