Paper Mirrors

Light from above is the truly
Crafty trick of a craftier
Magician.
Shadows are cast downwards onto
Paper.
A silhouette I see of a man
Who can never cast
His eyes back at
Me.
I
Am his maker yet he is also mine, looking
Back from the world of shadows,
Cast downwards onto paper,
Am I not light cast outwards from
The world of shadows, gleaming from above
As he lurks below?
My pen touches his shadow
And we write as one, pen to pen,
Reflected off of the lake
In the penumbra of incorporeal shadow,
Each turn of the page,
Each increase in number,
And the paper mirror, the world between worlds,
Is fresh and new,
So that each of us can touch our flesh to the page,
And watch the other from
The umbra, and shallow shadows of light,
And shallow shadows of night.
