DEAR READERS: I wanted to thank a reviewer for pointing out the AIDS thing in my previous chapter. I wanted to apologize if that was taken in a wrong way. I am aware that not all of those who have AIDS are sluts. I was referring to the way that many sluts happen to have it, and was referring to that in a kidding way. No offense to anyone.

Thank you for understanding.

“Shane, you third rate frog-faced fool!”

My best friend poked his head out of his locker to look at me with a flat gaze. “I don’t have a frog face.”

“Yes I’m sorry deary,” I apologized, batting my lashes. “It’s beautiful.”

He rolled his blue eyes at me, closing his locker and walking over to me.

“Candy...” he said with a sigh. I laughed lightly and spun around on my heel.

“Come on, Shane!” I said, taking off at a sprint down the hall.

“How can you do that in those shoes?!” he asked, catching up to me at my car and panting, his hands on his knees.

“Magic, dah-ling,” comes my reply. “Now hurry up. I have to give you a ride, and I don’t really want to, I’d like to be wasting my life away, so hurry up.” Shane rolled his eyes again, sliding into the passenger seat of my small red Honda. I flashed a toothy grin at him before pulling out and driving to the left.

“Candy, I live to the right.”

Brakes. Screech! Drive calmly.

“Righto.”

“Shut it, Shane.”

I glance at him to catch him grinning. Insert throwing something random at him, which happens to be a water bottle.

“Ow!”

Silence for the rest of the drive.

“Hey Candy?” Shane asks as he opens the door to the car. “Can I keep this water bottle?”

Screech!

Let’s get this point together here now. I have no life. The only things I live for are boys, my best friend, and my pet frog.

Yes, I have a pet frog. His name is Phil. Phil is not really a frog. He’s invisible and sits on my shoulder, cheating for me on the tests.

My dog doesn’t like Phil.

So the thing about my life is, there isn’t one. I have nothing to do all day. I go to school and get measly grades, not really caring. That’s a better description. I just don’t care.

So if you found me at the mall, or anywhere besides my house and the school for that matter, be very surprised. It’s rare.

To tell you the honest bitter truth, I’m boy hunting. I’ve been single, and I turned down guy who asked me out because I think he’d be a lousy boyfriend. I mean, he left his current girlfriend for someone else. I wouldn’t like that.

I’m really picky.

Among boys, I prefer those that are male. So basically, anyone hot, caring, and not a total idiot. Hell, I’ve even been known to like the occasional nerd because he’s just that nice.

I’m currently walking around the mall, bored out of my rudding mind. I don’t see anything interesting. Old lady, group of loud girls, two nerds, another old lady...

It just so happens that when you’re not paying attention you don’t really focus on things. So that’s how I crashed into someone.

Little did I know at the time this person who I’d just totaled would completely change my meaningless life.

“Uggg...” I groaned, holding a hand to my forehead, and I just knew a headache was on its way.

“Oh, I’m so sorry!”

I opened my eyes and peered through my hand to see a boy below me. A flush rose on my face, a rare occurrence just so you know, and sprang up off him.

“No, don’t be sorry!” I said way too fast. “I’m the one who wasn’t paying attention! Please don’t apologize!” I almost stumbled over my words.

“No, no, it’s ok...” he said, shaking his head as I held out my hand to pull him up. He grinned sheepishly at me. I studied his attractive face. First one I’d seen.

He was rather tall, probably around six foot. He wasn’t exactly solid, but he was moderately built, so I couldn’t figure how I’d even knocked him over. He was wearing all black, with long black pants that hung slightly loosely on him and folded around his black Etnies. His shirt had some band on it, one I didn’t care to register. Two studded black belts hung around his hips, and I noticed a dog collar around his neck. His black hair hung into his brown eyes, which were brought out slightly with a thick line of black liner around them.

“Um, as an apology, would you like to grab a Starbucks with me?” I asked bravely, instantly attracted to him. “On me.”

“Oh, I can’t make you pay...” he said, giving me a pleading/sad look.

“I insist,” I said, smiling. “I won’t feel better until I do.”

“Well...ok...” he said, glancing down at me.

“Uhh...there’s one across the street from here.” I smiled lightly at him.

“Ok. Let’s walk.”

I nodded, smiling warmly and walking next to him as we abandoned the mall and walked to the Starbucks across the street.

“Hm...just a Cafe Mocha with whipped cream, please,” I said, smiling. “Medium.”

“I’ll have the same, no whipped cream though.” He grinned at me, revealing pretty white teeth. Probably was forced to wear braces in middle school.

I paid, despite his new round of protests, and led the way to a glass table in the corner by the window. He followed me, stirring his drink slightly sullenly.

“So, am I forgiven?” I asked, grinning at him.

“For what? I ran into you.”

“Are we going to have to argue about this forever?” I asked playfully.

“’Parrently so.” He grinned back.

“Well, I’m sorry anyway,” I said, sipping my mocha. “I’m Candy, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you, Candy,” he said. Aww. “I’m Chris.”

“The pleasure is all mine, Chris,” I said. Aww. Cliche. Life is so fun.

The silence ensued for a few more minutes as we sipped at our mochas.

“So, Candy...”

“Hm?”

“I was curious...are you from around here?”

“Surely,” I said. “I live really near, actually.”

“Really? Me too. Strange...do you go to Phoenix High?”

“No, sadly. I go to Sorly.”

“Ah, no wonder I haven’t met you before.”

I was about to reply when I heard my phone ring.

“Aw crap.” I glanced at the text my mother had sent me. “I have to leave.”

“Oh...” he trailed off, a slightly disappointed expression taking over his face.

“Here,” I said, grabbing a sharpie from my back pocket and pulling his hand across the table, writing my number on the top, as well as ‘Candy’ written in cursive. “Give me a ring sometime, kay?” I smiled at him, then waved and took off, going on my way home to whatever disaster awaited me.
