This is it guys, the end of the first book!!
“Are you ready?” Vladimir said stepping out of the way of the door. I stood, still a little disoriented and walked past him into the corridor.
“No straying off understand,” he said waving a finger at me. He was lucky I didn’t bite it off. He lead me back up the stairs, yesterday he’d carried me down, now I wished he’d carry me back up. So many stairs.
Once outside the house we got into what had to be his car. It was a tiny little bug. Why did the biggest people have the smallest cars? I slid into the passenger’s seat, and watched as he crammed his hugeness into the car. I laughed, I couldn’t help myself. He shot me a dirty look and growled at me. I didn’t think vampires even did that anymore. We are all in essence animalistic, but over the years we’ve refined. I turned away from him and stared straight out the windshield. He finally got situated and looked over at me
“Where are we going?”
“Cabaret theater,” what was I supposed to do, lie. I needed the girl just as bad; maybe once we got there I could find an opening and get rid of him. I didn’t have to say anything else; he took off toward the city.
We pulled up in front of the theater, people were already lining up. That’s when I saw him, the man I’d seen when I was going to Edmunds. The one who invited me inside to see the “amazing song bird” shit she’d been under my nose the whole time. The parking was vale, Vlady got out first. I was about to get out but then it hit me. How was I going to shake Vlady if I didn’t have a weapon? I took a shot in the dark and reached under the seat, and low and behold there it was. A colt Commander, 45 Caliber Semi-Auto. Score. I shoved it in my pants at the small of my back and hurried out. I didn’t want him getting suspicious. The boy in his little red vest took the keys and dashed off.
“After you,” Vlady said smirking. I walked past him and up the steps. I made sure I kept him in my sight. It’s hard to trust a man after he’s tried to break your skull, not once but twice.
“Step right up and see the amazing song bird,” the man called. Bastard could have just told me.
The theater was huge; it didn’t look it from the outside. All the chairs were done in red velvet, the same as the rugs. The walls were a deep rich cream color. The stage rounded out almost a semi circle, the front covered in seashell lights. A blood red curtain hung closed. I felt like I was thrown back in time, like I was in some obscure theater back in France, so many years ago. I lead the Russian to the front of the stage where only a few seats sat open. I wondered why people wouldn’t be dying to sit so close. I sat down and leaned as far away from Vladimir as possible. I refused to be friendly with him. The theater was filled with chatter. There was so much noise that it ended up sounding like micro-phone feedback.
It wasn’t long before the lights dimmed. People instantly silenced themselves. It was so abrupt I had to look around and make sure they hadn’t all just left. The street caller waddled onto the stage.
“Welcome to the cabaret theater. I am happy to present to you al this evening, a show of mystic per potions.” He opened his arms wide. “Ladies and gentle men I give you the song bird” his spotlight faded, he was gone.
Something dark glided out from behind the curtain. The orchestra pit lights came one, and the violins began to play. Spot light… enchantment. There she was, small beautiful, deadly. Her tattered black dress fell to her knees. Her long dark hair cascaded around her like a river of ink. She opened her mouth and the creamy words began to pour forth. The power was palpable. It washed over the crowd, hitting like a wave. She began softly, she made you curious. Then the violins and drums boomed, she hit you with power, she let it rise up inside your soul. There was no fighting. I couldn’t look away, I was mesmerized. Vlady was too. We stared in amazement. She continued to build, I could feel it boil over, and then... explosion another wave of intense power came over the crowd. More instrumentals fade to black.
“Holy shit…” was all I could say. I never would have imagined that. It was like she had crept into my sole and taken a bit of it with her when she went. I needed more, was this how it was done? I looked over at Vlady who was equally as perplexed. Neither of us knew how to feel. People stood and began to leave, no one spoke, but we were all thinking the same thing. Amazing… people came from all over to hear her sing for 5 min.
“Well let’s go find her,” Vladimir said sternly. We waited for the theater to empty out before me moved. Vlady led the way, he went up the stage steps, and looked around. He pounced behind the curtain. I followed suit. We crept around the strange assortment of back stage props. And there she was. She sat inside one of those cages the carneys used for animals. How could they do such a thing? The round street caller was beside the cage.
“Good job my little buttercup, rest up, you have 2 more shows to do,” he reached his hand in and pat her on the head.
“Come now puny man lets go,” Vlady said, but that wasn’t going to happen. I pulled out the gun had swiped from his car and used the butt to get him right in the back of the neck. No matter how strong you are, a blow to the soft spot by the base of the skull will knock you out. He fell flat on his face, just as I expected him to. I slipped the gun back in my pants. I took one last look around to make sure that no one else was there. I was alone, I finally had the siren.
I tip toed over to the cage, I didn’t want to startle her. She was still scared. She looked at me wide eyed. She pulled her knees to her chest and huddled in the farthest corner.
“Don’t be afraid,” I said trying to sound soothing, but failing. I was having a pretty shitty week. She opened her mouth but nothing came out. She tried again.
“Wh….who, a- a- are you you?” she stammered over her words. She really was a mute. Her songs must come from somewhere else inside her, something deeper. Almost like a power.
“My name is jack, and I’m here to help you.” I didn’t even buy that. I moved a little closer, she scooted even farther into the corner, as if she could phase through them.
“It's ok, don’t be scared, I want to get you out of here,” I reached my hand into the cage. I don’t know what I expected her to do, she wasn’t an animal, she wouldn’t just sniff it. No she cowered even more.
“There are some bad vampires after you, see that guy over there,” I pointed to where Vlady laid, poor bastard, “See I knocked him out so he wouldn’t hurt you. If you stay here more like him will come, and they will get you.” She whimpered a little, but she was slowly coming out of the corner.
“That’s right real easy now, see I'm friendly,” I smiled trying my best not to show my fangs. She looked at me; confusion was all I could see in her dark eyes.
“Come on, it’ll be ok.” I grabbed one of the bars and pulled until it bowed out giving her enough room to walk right through. I stepped back and held out my hand. She ignored it. She placed one little bare foot on the ground then the other. I did it, I got her, but then again, was there ever any doubt.
I was to busy inflating my ego to notice her going for something that hung on the wall. It was a sheath; I didn’t doubt that a sword was inside of it. She glared at me angrily and pulled the sword out with amazing speed and grace. Damn Edmund wasn’t joking. She took a stance and just stared. Her eyes were hot with intense anger.
“Ok, lets relax a little,” I said taking a few steps backwards, I didn’t want to be in swinging reach of that thing. I moved my hand to where I put the gun, she didn’t seem to realize, she just kept her stance. I pulled the gun quickly. I get to be quick too; I am a vampire after all. Her face changed from anger to sadness, to fear. She let her body ease out of her stance and let the sword dangle loosely in her hand.
“That’s right girl, I could shoot you from here but you’d have to take 10 steps towards me to even touch me with the point of that sword. Is that a risk you’re willing to take?” I grinned at her. I wasn’t bluffing if the bitch tried to slice me to pieces I’d blow off her arms, problem solved. She didn’t need arms to sing. She slid the sword back into its sheath, and tied the sheath around her waist.
“Now come here,” I never lowered my gun, if I let my guard down she’d pull that thing out so fast, that I wouldn’t even realize it till my head was rolling across the floor. She took cautious steps toward me. Once she was in reach I snatched her by her arm and pulled her close. She groaned and struggled but I wouldn’t let her go. I practically picked her up and carried her out the stage door exit.
The sun was beginning to melt into the horizon. I dragged the beauty along beside me. With difficulty I managed to pull my tiny cell from my pocket. I dialed Luciouse’s and waited eagerly for him to answer.
“Jack how good to hear from you, I hope you have some good news for me” his voice was chipper.
“I got the girl Luciouse, where should I bring her?” the girl continued to struggle.
“Bring her up to the research facilities.”
“Your kidding right, that’s like a 3 week trip.”
“I know but it’s the safest place to keep her.”
“Shit fine, I’ll see you in three weeks if all goes well,” I was starting to doubt that. As I spoke, they came. Vampires, from every corner, every ally, seeping out of every shadow, and converging on us.
“Good luck then Jack,” the phone went dead. I knew what they wanted, but I wasn’t going to give her up that easy. I pulled the siren close to me, pinning her waist against mine... She whimpered a little, and looked up at me. Until now she’d been struggling but in the midst of about a dozen not so friendly vampires, she clung to me afraid. I pulled my gun. I wouldn’t be able to kill them, but I sure could hurt them. They came in closer now, fangs bared… I fired….
