Thirteen steps down the garden path
Thirteen,
I take hesitant steps to reach you,
Only twelve more steps to go,
I use the time to think,
Fond memories bombard my mind,
I become saturated by them,
Twelve,
They are bittersweet things,
These visions of the past,
They give me access to vision only,
The other senses are lost,
More than anything I miss your touch,
Eleven,
The cold winters wind,
Never used to bite so hard,
Your warmth is lost to me,
Unlike the roses that climb the archway,
Summer will not bring it back,
Ten,
My eyes react to the cruel pictures,
Your love only given to them,
Not the rest of the body,
I try to cry the memories away,
My cheeks drip with them,
Nine,
I feed the soil,
My eyes as red as the poppies,
I go to them now,
They were your favourite,
They make for sorry company now,
Eight,
The scent of the garden stirs my senses,
It breathes for you now,
With green lungs,
You sigh through pouting perfumed petals,
I sigh with you,
Seven,
Too many months,
Too many regrets,
More numerous than leaves,
Falling too far, too fast,
Discarded like so many unwanted thoughts,
Six,
I still don’t know what to say to you,
Will you hear me?
I’m six steps away from you,
You’re six feet under me,
How much space can love cover?
Five,
I’m not sure anymore,
The amount of times I’ve screamed your name,
Imagining it hurtling through space,
A cry loud enough to shake heaven,
Hoping they would send you back to me,
Four,
Would you want to come back,
I would start to sleep at night,
If I knew you were alright,
Sometimes I think I see you near me,
In daylight I know better,
Three,
I know we will always have those seven years,
I pray it’s enough to hold onto,
Above all I will not join you until its time,
Something drives me to keep this garden,
It is the only link I have left,
Two,
These thirteen steps seem longer,
Every time I walk down them,
Not far now,
Nerves and tears are slowing me down,
At least I know just what to say,
One,
I’m here,
I miss you,
I love you,
I will look after the garden of our love,
Until it covers me too.
