Chapter Two: Paint the Scene in Shades
David
My heart is on the verge of leaping out of my mouth. The shivers that wrack my body must be travelling up the pair of arms wrapped around my waist because his hands tighten on my hips. I can smell the alcohol dripping from his breath.
“What are you doing?” My voice is small, barely louder than the music drifting out from the party. This is the last thing I expected to happen.
Black hair hangs in his eyes, so only his clenched jaw shows. His arms leave me and he stumbles back towards the glowing house.
Stunned by the sudden departure, I lean against a tree, cradling my throbbing cheek. How did this happen? I thought everything was going so well…

“Jasper is throwing a party at this house on the lake,” Kevin announces, excitement pouring off of him in waves. “Everyone is going to be there,” he adds as he sits down, Brian mysteriously absent. He was in math class. I wonder what happened to him?
Jeremy smiles and steals one of Kevin’s fries. “We have to go. If it’s anything like last year’s Blast we’ll regret it if we don’t.”
I tilt my head inquisitively. “Jasper? Blast?”
“Jasper Quin is the Junior Class President, but that doesn’t matter,” Kevin states, practically bouncing in his seat. “What does matter is the fact that he throws the best parties every year.”
Jeremy nods. “This is mostly because he has loaded parents who are never around.” He must be very lonely. “The first party is the Blast. It’s held the first Saturday of the new school year.”
I can’t help but smile a little. “To blast off the school year.”
They both nod. “You should come,” Jeremy says, biting his lip.
I shift uncomfortably. A party? There would be drinking, sex and all sorts of sinful things occurring. Father would be upset if he found out I went to such a place. I study the pleading face of one gorgeous Jeremy Knox. Plus, I don’t want to be tempted to have more thoughts like that dancing around my mind. “I don’t think so. I wouldn’t belong there.”
My friend’s amber eyes get wide and he grips my elbow. “Don’t be ridiculous, of course you would belong. Anyone can come after all.”
“I don’t know…” I really shouldn’t.
His shoulders slump dejectedly. “Then who’s going to keep me in line?”
Kevin snickers, but I frown when I note the hint of desperation in Jeremy’s voice. “What do you mean?” I ask hesitantly.
He taps his index fingers together, barely looking at me. “When I drink I get a bit-” he looks up as if searching for the right words.
“Out of hand?” Kevin submits before chomping into an apple.
“Yes. So I need someone there I can trust to keep me from doing something completely stupid.”
My frown softens. He trusts me. Still… “Why can’t Kevin or Brian do that?”
Kevin shakes his head. “I drink and get forgetful. As for Brian…” he shrugs and gestures to Jeremy.
My roommate smiles slightly. “Brian enjoys seeing me make a fool of myself way too much to stop me.” He sniggers softly. “Then again, what brother doesn’t enjoy that?”
I fear I may regret this later. I sigh, “So how are we getting there?”
To my surprise, Jeremy embraces me, nearly sending us both toppling off the bench. He whispers in my ear, “Thank you. I promise you’ll have fun, David.”
I feel my cheeks burning as he pulls away. What have I gotten myself into?
Brian
I zip up my pants and glance at my watch. Fifteen minutes left. I study the half naked girl below me, sucking on a fresh joint. She smiles at me, running her hand up my leg. “Want to go again?” she asks dreamily.
Grabbing her hand short of my crotch, I shake my head. “Sorry sweetheart, but I have to get going.”
She pouts, but takes another drag. “When can I see you again?”
I half smile and step away from her. “Monday at lunch,” I state as I kick her pants towards her.
She sits up, taking in a lung full of smoke. It’s already half gone. “I’m not sure if I can wait that long.”
I have to force myself not to grin. Quickly, I yank out of few more joints and hand them to her. “Will this help ease the separation, Melanie,” I purr her name.
She nods eagerly, snatching the drugs from me. “Thanks, Brian.”
“Those do cost money to get,” I say slowly, brushing my hand against her cheek.
Catching on, she grabs her bag and yanks out a teal wallet. “How much?”
“Ten bucks each,” I state coolly. It’ll cost more eventually.
She places three twenties in my open hand.
I shove the money in my back pocket and lean over to kiss her passionately. She bites my lip hungrily, begging for more attention. Carefully, I ease myself away from her. “I’ll see you Monday.”
She nods and reaches for her underwear with one hand while the other places the joint back in her mouth.
As I walk away from the baseball bleachers, I allow myself to grin. If she only knew what else was mixed into those simple joints. The thrill of sweet seduction trembles down my spine. She’ll be gone in a matter of months. A new record…
