The Man I Hardly Knew

I know you’re up there

Winking your eyes down at me

But how can you sit and watch

As I cry myself to sleep

Over a man I hardly knew

I weep and miss him day after day

Though I hardly knew more than his name

All the same, he was always there

Until you took him away from me

He was important to me

Though I didn’t know it at the time

But I know now just what you took

When you killed that man

Just because I was little didn’t mean I’d forget

And so I glare at your twinkling star

Waiting for you to apologize to me

Though I know you never will

Because you’re gone

And you’re not coming back

Because you decided to take you

You sent yourself to the stars

I’ve long given up trying to understand

Because I know it’s not a likely event

But I do want you to know

That even though I’m mad at you now

And I’ll ask you why nearly every day

Please know and remember

That I love the man I hardly knew

As he was and as he is.
