VERSE 1
They say that down a side road, in the country, by the sea
There lies a hidden house where colored lanterns used to be
Swinging back and forth and shining down onto the drive
Where carriages would rein in and the many guests arrive
Every night, a celebration lived within its walls
Lords and ladies danced and sang along its hallowed halls
And still, some nights, when high above, the stars are in the sky
They say that you can hear them if you chance to happen by
CHORUS
And they sing
Their voices strong and clear
Echoing
Out for all to hear
And their song
It ends all too soon
But never fades completely
Constantly repeating
In those haunted halls beneath the moon
VERSE 2
The doors are standing open still, for never were they closed
If ever there was such a time, then no one living knows
The sourceless sound of laughter echoes darkly down the hall
Anyone who dares to look will see nothing at all
The stairs creak of their own accord, as though with heavy weight
Or perhaps the steps of those who are arriving late
The wind blows through the corridor, where tapestries once hung
And, somewhere in that wind, you hear, a song is being sung
CHORUS
VERSE 3
The lyrics are so hard to hear, you strain to catch the words
And suddenly, you realize it’s nothing but the birds
And then, once more, you hear the song and now you know for sure
No raven, wren, or whippoorwill could make a sound so pure
It seems as though it’s calling you, and follow it you must
Leaving footprints etched into the many years of dust
The doors swing out into a room that’s made of time and glass
You feel them walking by you and you shiver as they pass
CHORUS
VERSE 4
The walls resound with whispers as of voices sunk in prayer
A glance into the open room reveals nobody there
The songs, they flow like cheap red wine into the glass of night
The music grows much louder with the fading of the light
The strings reach a crescendo, and into the growing gloom
An army made of dancers bursts, all waltzing through the room
The silver moon drifts slowly through the dark skies overhead
And illuminates the dancers, who don’t even know they’re dead
CHORUS
VERSE 5
They stretch their arms out toward you and draw you onto the floor
Neither song nor dance is at all unclear anymore
You join your hands with theirs and let them lead you as they sing
Your feet begin to move in step as quick as anything
And all too soon, the rising sun has through the windows shone
You stop and look around to find you’re dancing all alone
But always now, the song will draw you for another glance
Into that world of shadows and into their lonely dance
CHORUS
