This is something that I created both short notice and in little time. It was for my website; which of course was never created. It was a school project.
This was based off of a picture(the 'picture of the month': was a girl with long silver hair and her hands clasped in what looked like prayer; a little red round marble eminating light in front of her) and was to be used as a short example/idea of what I wanted/expected to recieve on my site. So...if it lacks a lot of things, I'm sorry.
Also, I am unsure if this is the complete story. I'm pretty sure it is, but seeing as I finished it on the school's computer I can't be completely sure. I'm fairly sure I sent the final draft to myself, but not entirely. (if it isn't then it's almost all of it) Hope it's ok.
She walked down the empty streets of the brick-paved road. At least she assumed it was brick. Dusk was gathering, the light fading into the distance. The houses to her sides were magnificent, each greater than the last. They intimidated her with their stature and bravura, towering high above her small figure. This was the future of mankind; she remembered hearing from her elders, if left to their own devices. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.
But she could see hidden among the palaces, in the alleys and shadows, were malnourished and dying animals; forgotten and abandoned. They were forbidden to enter the glorious havens around them, banned to the streets to fend for themselves. Under other conditions, they might survive adequately, maybe even come out on top. But since mankind had taken over, they were chased form potential meals with various objects thrown after them; screamed at for existing; fraught to stay alive. It nauseated her.
That wasn’t all. Factories bubbled around the edges of the city, pouring new and poisonous substances into the air. It would spread everywhere, polluting everything it touched and making it toxic. So much would die for advances in society; so much destruction would blindly be committed. And hardly any person seemed to care.
But she could change that. She felt it. She could bring hope back to the world. Mankind would advance, they always would. But they needed to find a safer way to do it. If taking away what they had already created was what had to happen for them to realize it, then so be it.
Her simple white robe fluttered in a breeze, and she coughed as chemicals drifted past in smog. An old well lay in front of her, crumbling beyond any hope of repair. Why it was still here and not destroyed for more construction area, no one knew. It was just a relic of times past. Simpler times. Pleasant times. A tree struggled to try and grow next to it, though it was failing miserably. Weak and pitiful, it seemed to symbolize the spirit that people had about nature. Dying and slowly fading into nothing.
She stepped up to the well, seeing a spot in between bricks that would hold her precious item. It was small and faintly red, dulled from years of nearly constant wear. She placed it in the opening, which was just tight enough to not let it roll around. Clasping her hands together and closing her eyes, she began reciting words she had learned from her elders many years ago. She had been told that there would be a time when she would know when to say them, and then more would come. She was told not to be afraid of what would happen, to just do as she felt.
The words came in a steady blur now; she didn’t even know what it was she was saying. But her mouth kept moving and emitting sound, and she kept going. It was now dark outside, and a breeze had picked up again. Slowly, the little object began to glow, its luster returning in small pieces. She didn’t open her eyes, but she could feel something happening. Its glow turned into a shine, which then turned into many individual streams of light emanating from it. She kept her eyes closed, feeling a power starting to flow through her and into the little ball.
Creatures came out from the mysterious shadows, coming towards the light. They knew the thing was powerful, and was going to help them. Both the strong and the weak came, predator and prey. They bothered each other none, knowing there would be time for such petty things later.
The ignorant citizens either lay comfortably in their beds, or ignored the actions taking place outside, too wrapped up in their own lives to notice. Mankind, at least in this area, had grown numb to the world around them that lay at their feet, dying by their hands. It had to be stopped; or at least slowed.
