He Just Doesn’t Give Up, Does He?
Chapter Two
“Sooo?” Tara asked Marissa excitedly as she followed Marissa to her locker, the next morning.
“So what?” She replied dully, too tired to tell her friend that it was really annoying when she drew out her words like that. It made her sound stupid and she wasn’t. Just really perky.
Damn the perky people.
“So, how was the drive home? Tell me all the details!” Tara spoke quickly. “Were you nice to him, Mar? Oh please, tell me you were, he was so hot like Oh my God, I want you now, hot! And he likes you too, I can totally tell he does and you really should be nice to him, since he could be good for you! Okay, now I’m dying to know what happened, tell me!”
“It took him ten minutes to convince me to get in the truck. I was a bitch to him like usual. When we got home, I went to my room and stayed there. The End.” Marissa dead-panned as she pulled out a text-book.
Tara gaped at her.
“Marissa!” Tara just about screeched.
“What, dammit?” Marissa glared over at her friend, who’s mouth was stuttering inaudible words.
Tara screeched her name again and threw her hands up in the air, waving them around like a lunatic. Nearly taking out a short girl who was trying to walk down the hallway.
Marissa winced.
“You were not a bitch to him!” Tara cried out, when words could finally make their way out her astonished mouth.
A few people in the corrider, looked up and over to the source of noise that was louder then the usual morning buzz of conversation. Marissa and Tara. Figured.
Someone scoffed at Tara’s statement and muttered low under their breath, “She is a bitch, what makes him an exception?”
Whoever ‘he’ was, that is. People didn’t like Marissa very much anymore and any excuse they could use to fuel their dislike for her, they took it gladly.
Too bad Marissa never gave them the reaction they wanted, she just took it all in stride. Just like how she was taking Tara’s reaction:
“I was.”
“You were not!”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“NO!”
Why was it that her only good friend had to be a friggen Drama Queen on a permanent sugar high?
Instead of continuing their little “yes, no” game, Marissa raised an eyebrow at Tara and calmly pointed out, “Aren’t I always a bitch?”
“MARISSA!” Tara yelled her name for the third time, grabbing onto her friends arm and clutching it quite painfully.
“Ow, dammit!” She complained. “You crazy blonde, let go of my arm!”
“Why would you be mean to him?” Tara groaned and fell against a locker with a clang. “Why? He was so gorgeous! And nice! And charming! And-“
“If you think so, why don’t you just go after him?” Marissa shut her locker, rolling her eyes, wondering why this was bothering her friend so much.
She wanted to tell Tara that he was nothing but a flirtatious prick who liked hitting on underaged girls, but she figured her friend’s poor little mind couldn’t take something like that. Seeing as she took an instant liking to Luke and was now insisting on coming over today so she could “inspect him some more”…
“Hello, did you not see the way he was looking at you? It was like, he was a good little boy on Christmas and he was just waiting to rip open his present!”
Marissa gagged.
“You really need to stop reading all those romance novels of yours, it’s turning your brain to muck.” She mumbled as they continued down the hallway together.
“Don’t forget, you used to read them with me!” Tara replied cheerfully as she fairly skipped down the halls, waving at a couple of people she knew.
Marissa waved to no one.
“That was before,” She said stiffly, as she kept her eyes forward, unnerving a few people as her cold brown eyes passed over them with some distaste as she spoke again, bitterly. “Before I realized romance was dead.”
Tara stopped her, a look of concern passing over her face.
“Mar…”
“I’m alright, Tara.” Marissa quickly said before her friend could start into her concerned spiel that usually repeated the same things over and over again. “Just a bit tense. “ She paused for a moment. “He’s making me tense. He won’t keep his perverted eyes off my ass.”
Tara nodded her head, before breaking out into a huge grin.
See, Tara was right! He did like her! She would totally have to set them up now, Marissa needed a man.
“Well, you do have a cute ass...” She spoke slowly, pretending to be thoughtful as she tapped her chin. Marissa scowled at her.
“Shut up.”
Tara laughed a little and gave her friend a quick hug as she stopped in front of their class and the bell rang. “Come on, sweet cheeks, into class we go!”
She even had the nerve to pat Marissa’s backside as she walked into the room and laughed some more as Marissa snapped at her, “Lecherous bitch!”
--Was it mentioned that Tara was convinced she was right and Luke did like Marissa?
It’s being mentioned again.
The girls walked out of the school together, Marissa’s head down as she shuffled her books around in her bag so it would’nt feel so bulky. Tara gasped and Marissa looked up at her, an eyebrow raised.
“He’s here again!” She squealed with excitement, starting down the stairs. “Mar, come on let’s say hi!”
“Wait, what,no, TARA!” Marissa cried out as her friend skipped over to Luke who was waiting in the parking lot, leaned against his beat up old truck.
She groaned, “Dammit, why won’t he just leave me alone?”
Pushing her way past a group of girls who had suddenly stopped in front of her (to stare at Luke, of course, new prospects were thrilling in this town), Marissa slowly made her way over to him.
“What are you doing here?” She demanded, looking pissed with him already.
Luke grinned at her, and opened his mouth to reply when he heard a bright voice, call out, “Marissa!”
A pretty redhead and her friends were quickly making their way over and inwardly, Marissa rolled her eyes in disgust, as Luke cocked his head curiously to the side to regard the girl who’s cleavage was ready to burst from her shirt.
Leona Matthews. Leave it to the school slut to only want to talk to her when she had a hot guy around her. Had she no shame?
“Hi, Mar, how are you?” She fairly cooed at the glowering, dark-skinned girl. “I didn’t see you at lunch, sweetie.”
Tara rolled her eyes and looked over at Luke, who was watching the girl curiously.
“You were too busy fucking Jake Johnston in the janitors closet to notice where I was,” Marissa replied, dismissing her right away. She didn’t want to play nice with her, at least Marissa didn’t try to hide the fact that she was bitch.
There was a pause. Leona wanted to snap at Marissa (what a bitch) and call her every mean name in the book…But not now. Not while she was in the prescence of a guy who looked good enough to eat. (and was secretly trying not to laugh at her.)
“Haha, Marissa, you are sooo funny!” She gave a fake laugh before turning to slid her eyes over Luke, pasting a seductive look on her face. “Who’s your friend?”
Ugh, Give. Her. A. Break!
“He’s not my friend and neither are you,” Marissa snapped, crossing her arms over her chest. “Cut the shit, Leona, your acting is pathetic. Piss off.”
Luke coughed to keep himself from laughing. It looked like he wasn’t the only one, Marissa gave the cold treatment to. That was a slightly, comforting thought.
Leona’s eyes widened and her pouty mouth opened slightly, making her look very stupid for a split second. Then she composed herself and glared at the girl.
“You’re such a bitch, you know that?” She hissed at her. “I can see why no one likes you, except for her.” Leona glanced at Tara. “She should get a friggen award for putting up with you.”
“I should get a friggen award for having to listen to you, can you not take a hint?” Marissa retorted. “Stop wasting my time and go fuck something.”
Leona smirked and watched for Marissa’s reaction as she murmured softly, so only she could hear.
“Mark’s back in town.”
Marissa’s eyes widened and she took a step back, as Leona whirled around and walked away with her friends, who all the while shot longing glances back at Luke.
Tara burst out laughing the minute they left, noticing the look on her friend’s face but ignoring it. She wouldn’t tell her right now, anyway. “God, they never quit do they?”
Marissa shook her head and quickly masked as her shock , dryly replying, “What would be the fun in that, if they did?”
Luke, who had remained silent through the whole ordeal, chuckled softly and murmured, “Now I remember why I hated high school.”
“What? The free fucks became too much for you? Too tired after one girl to take the next?” Marissa drawled as she grabbed for Tara’s arm, her intentions of yelling at Luke gone. “Let’s go.”
Swiftly, Luke placed himself in front of Marissa.
“Not so fast, love,” He grinned at her. “You didn’t thank me for the ride yesterday.”
“Marissa, that’s so rude!” Tara softly chastised her friend in the background. “I mean, he did come get you and drive you home…”
Luke smiled at her, she was nice.
“Only because you had some ‘appointment’ yesterday,” Marissa snappd back, before raising an eyebrow at Luke. “Is that what you came here for? A thank you?”
She rolled her eyes, thinking him to be an idiot.
Luke only grinned once more. “I think that would only be polite…” He ducked his head closer to hers. “Don’t you think so?” He murmured.
Marissa pulled back, “No!”
Tara gasped at her, “Mar!”
“No,no, she doesn’t have to thank me with words-” Luke said and before he could continue, Marissa snapped at him.
“I’m not sleeping with you!”
He stared at her incredulously. “Whoever said anything about that ,baby?”
Not that he would’ve totally mind if she agreed.
Marissa growled at him and grabbed Tara’s arm, again. “Can we please leave now?”
“Thank him first, Mar!” Tara protested as her shorter friend started to drag her away.
“No!”
“Mar!”
In long strides, Luke made his way over again and stopped in front of the girls. He gave them a breathtaking grin.
“You owe me a thank-you…” He looked pointedly at Marissa. “And I want one my way – and no, I don’t mean, having sex with me.”
Marissa rolled her eyes.
“You’re not going to give up, are you?” She asked wryly as Tara made a small noise of excitement.
Luke shook his head.
“Fine.”
Grinning again, Luke motioned back over to his truck. “Hop in then.”
Marissa’s hold on Tara’s arm tightened as she turned to trudge over to the truck, she dragged her friend with her. “Tara’s coming with us.” She glanced over her shoulder to silence her friend’s protests with a look.
Luke shrugged, “Not a problem.”
He was just happy it took him less then 10 minutes to convince her to come with him this time.
For a moment, he questioned if all this effort he was trying to put in for this girl was really worth it? Not to mention the fact that he was losing his dignity over her…
But then he watched her pouting face, slide in the seat beside her friend who was whispering excitedly to her, squeezing her hand and bouncing up and down a little.
Damn, he was hooked.
They had all clambered into the pick-up and as Luke, started the engine and pulled out of the school parking lot, the girls spoke up together.
“Where are we going?”
Luke looked over, and noticed the blatant curiousity on both Tara and Marissa’s face. He gave a secretive smile and winked, holding Marissa’s gaze.
“You’ll see.”
