xxxChapter 1xxx

My name is Carmen Sans. I’m 14 years old, have an older sister and an older brother, a pet great dane named Mix, and the greatest (albeit oddest) family and friends ever. I’m a Freshman at Rickson- Cambridge High, and I live in New York, although not near the city. My life is packed with the typical teen drama- siblings, friends, guys, school, stress, and, of course, fashion and make-up.

I guess you could consider my looks pretty average. I’m 5’ 2”, have straight brown hair, and have dark brown eyes. I have a slight bit of acne, and my skin is a typical medium hue. But I am in love with fashion and make-up. I’m constantly blowing my allowance and baby sitting money (yes, I’m a teenage baby sitter- how cliché,) on the newest beauty products. I’m especially in to buying make-up, hoping it will play up my mainstream features. It never does.

You’ve probably collected that I’m pretty much your average teen. And like all average teens, I have friends and a crush. My friends are named Olivia and Cassie. Cassie has deep blue eyes and long red hair, and Hilary has chocolate brown hair that’s straight and cut in a graduated bob, and green eyes. Both of them are like my 3rd and 4th sisters. They’re the perfect mix- Olivia is more daring, while Cassie is more cautious. Olivia is more serious sometimes, Cassie more carefree.

Oh, and Kayne. He’s my best guy friend. You wouldn’t believe how well he understands us girls (without being gay, mind you!). He always, always gives me the best advice. He is also my “hit man”, as he calls it. He is always alive and happy and funny. But him being my “hit man” means he always helps me out, and gets me information, and does things to help my various dramatic situations. Kay, as we call him, is like my second brother.

My crush’s name is Daryl. He’s in 3 of my classes, and he’s friendly toward me. Daryl has dark brown hair and green eyes, and a great smile. He is one of my best guy friends, 2nd to Kay. He is definitely NOT the guy-girl Kay is. But his smile makes me feel weak. However, I’m almost positive that he isn’t into me that way.

That is one thing Kay will not divulge. He knows very well that he could find this out with the flick of a wrist, considering that he and Daryl are best buds. But he simply refuses, saying that that is not his territory. I tell him to make it his territory. he just shakes his head and laughs.

“Oh, Carmen, how has your sister Penelope been doing in college? Did she get into St. Lucas State?”

“Yes, Mrs. Rinolds, she did,” I said bitterly. Truth be told, I would prefer NOT to be seen talking to my 3rd Period History teacher in the middle of the hallway like I am now. Much less would I like to be talking about my sister, with which she has had an insane obsession ever since she first came to this school just over 5 years ago.

“Oh, that’s just splendid!” Mrs. Rinolds gushes. Her enthusiasm almost makes me gag. “Oh, Carmen dear, you have to give me her Sorority address! I must write her!”

“Mrs. Rinolds, I’m kind of going to be late for class. Can this wait?” I can’t believe I’m saying this. Since when is being late to class such a big deal to me? I can usually come up with a way to avoid tardiness at the very last possible minute. Unfortunately, my teacher knows this.

“Oh, you’ll be fine. You’re never late. But wh-“

Aren’t teachers supposed to press kids to be on time? I wonder, completely zoning my sister-obsessed teacher out. I mean, it’s only October, and already one of my teachers has seeked me out as their Penelope-Sans-information-center. Every year, I get one new, obsessed teacher in place of my old one.

That’s when I see it- my chance out. Or I see them, to be more precise. Cassie and Olivia. They’re both walking to Math 4, and their route is right my way.

“Oh, Olivia! Cassie!” I call out. Both of them look my way, and I shoot them a pleading glance. Immediately they understand and rush to my side. This shuts my teacher up.

“Oh, Mrs. Rinolds, we have to go! Carmen is supposed to come walk to class with us!” Olivia is as convincing as ever.

“But Mrs. Rinolds was just asking me about my sister,” I say, as if pleading for her to me loose. Which they know is completely untrue.

“Nah, we really have to go, Car!” Cassie pipes in. We’ve rehearsed this dozens of times.

“Uhm, well, all right then, but you’ll have to get back to me on that, Ca-“

“OK, bye then!” I call out, willingly letting my friends drag me away. Once we’re out of her bewildered sight, they let me go.

“Thanks so much!”

“No problem!” Olivia shrugs it off. “But, ya know, we actually do have to get to class.”

“Oh, yeah, right, Almost forgot!”

Cassie rolls her eyes. “Nice, Car.”

We head off in the direction of Math class, when I see him. Him meaning none other than Daryl Wentson. I suck in my breath.

“Oh, god. There he is. Here we go.” Olivia sighs, fishing trough her messenger bag.

Cassie glances over at him. “He’s looking this way, Carmen. Whatcha going to do?”

“I’ll show you,” I say, with a sudden surge of confidence. “Daryl!” I call out, and he immediately catches my eye.

“Hey!” He says, trotting up to us. He changes directions so that he’s walking the same way as us, which I find immensely strange.

“What’s up?” I ask. Olivia jabs me in the ribs with a finger.

“Eh, not much. Just heading to Gym.”

“Umm, isn’t the gymnasium that way?” I say, pointing behind us.

“Oh…yeah! Right!” He says, laughing nervously. He looks flustered. “Well, see you guys later, then! We’re all still meeting for pizza at 5:30, right?”

“Totally,” Cassie pipes in. She’s like our group’s social director.

“Cool. See you!” He smiles at me.

I feel weak as he heads off in the other direction. Olivia jabs me again. “Oooh, did you see how nervous he was around you?”

“Yeah! And he smiled at you when he left!” My friends are really bugging me.

“Yeah, so? What does this all mean?” I’m aware now that I’m blushing as we stop just outside the classroom.

“Welll…” Cassie said.

“It means….” Olivia continued.

“YOU’RE BOTH IN LOVE!” They yell out in unison. I gasp. Did theyseriously just yell that out…in the halway, no less? I ask them this.

“Yes.” They both laugh.
