Sunday, after a while of studying, came. I woke up, went swimming, got to the dorm. Slept again and later got up to get ready. I had yesterday picked (with the help of Marie) a nice dress for the occasion, as had her, for I was definitely not going alone.

“Ready?” I asked her. She still didn’t love the idea any more than me but she nodded. We left the room with bandanas on our heads covering our nicely done hair, and she wearing a pair of my new contacts.

“I don’t see why the bandanas are necessary, it’s not like any one in the building knows we exist” she demanded of me.

“Precisely, we blend in normally, with this we don’t” I told her. She huffed at me and made her way to the elevator.

“No you don’t,” I told her and dragged her to the stairs. “Just starting to climb stairs instead of taking the elevator is a start on more physical activity for your body other than writing and walking” I told her. She groaned but let me pull her in.

After we were a few blocks away from the building she took my cue and removed her sweatshirt and bandana.

“Wow” I said.

“What?” she asked.

“You look gorgeous” she told her.

“Right,” was her snide remark. We walked side by side towards the main street and then towards the sorority house. As they came nearer I exclaimed that I really didn’t want to do this.

“Think of Harvey” was the only thing that Marie could think of saying. They finally reached the place and went around the house to the party they were having at the back. They saw that the place was not only big but full. She was about to push open the fence when a blonde much taller than her came besides them.

“I’m sorry, today’s event, and, like, all events are, like, by invitation only.” She squeaked. Marie tried to hide her disgusted face and looked towards her.

“Like, I don’t care about your party, I’m here to see Emily” the tall blonde popped a gum and stopped.

“Like, Emily’s not, like, seeing anybody. She, like, just broke up with her, like, boyfriend” she said in an undertone as if communicating the gravest news.

“Like, I know” I challenged her once more. “I’m actually her friend and I came to see how she was doing, I was concerned and I thought maybe people here don’t care, so that’s why they throw a party when she’s feeling so badly. Simply forgetting about her” my tone changed from misleadingly bubbly to seriously uninterested in the bitch in front of me.

“Like, who do think you are?” the girl asked.

“Who are you?” Alice countered.

“Ashley” she answered.

“Well, Ashley, would you be so kind as to tell me how to reach Emily’s room?” I asked her nicely.

“You haven’t answered my question” she taunted.

“Alice” I said. Ashley’s mouth gaped.

“Like, you’re, like, Alice? The Alice? Like, She’s been muttering about you, like, all week long” Ashley told her, afraid anybody would hear her or see her that she hadn’t blown away the two crashers yet. Alice noticed another girl was coming towards her. She blinked as she rolled her eyes slightly so as not to be noticed.

“Good, will you let me in then, please?” I asked courteously. Ashley nodded.

“What’s going on here?” another tall blonde asked.

“Like, This girl has come to visit Emily, she, like, says she knows about, like, you know what. Oh, and, like, she’s Alice!” she ended. The other girls eyes glanced down to me and I suddenly felt small.

“You’re Alice?” the other girl said in an undertone, looking down at me, I ignored her glance that said you’re short.

“What’s with the whispering in this place?” Marie finally talked. The two girls glared at her, unable to look her down because she was taller.

“Yeah,” I said one last time, hopefully. “Who are you?”

“Diane” she said twirling her hair.

“Well, Di, am I gonna have a problem visiting her?” I asked in a threatening tone, even though both were disgusted by me they let me in.

Diane walked away and Ashley took us inside.

“Feel free to get lost anytime, Marie” I told her. She had told me she wanted to see what the party was like, personally, I also preffered talking to Emily alone. Once up a flight of stairs there was a hallway with half a dozen rooms and two more hallways down each end, Ashley took me to the left and left again down the second hallway. She stopped on three doors shy of the end of the hall, where there was another door, possibly the bathrooms.

Ashley knocked, but no response came. She knocked again, trying not to sound too persistent.

“Go away” someone sobbed from within.

“Em?” I risked talking. “It’s me, Alice. I had been meaning to come see you” I told her.

“Alice?” the sobbing seemed to diminish. Footsteps were heard coming towards the door and she was surprised to also see Ashley there.

“What do you want?” Emily snapped at Ashley. “Like, I was just showing her where you’re room was” she replied, too scared to put in too many likes.

“Come in” she said to me. I did. As I entered I realized that she had a roommate, and she possibly was avoiding her room at all costs, the place looked terrible.

“Sugah, you look terrible” I commented.

“You think?” she asked me rhetorically.

“Em, what happened?” I asked and sat down ready to hear every single detail she told me.

“I broke up with him! I realized that it was worthless” she said. Her sobbing started again. “You were right, why not be something else than just a girlfriend?” she told me. Whoa, I had not seen that coming.

“Em, I just meant for you to lighten up and not be just all about him in a conversation, like you should be trying to be part of the conversation too, if you have an opinion you should speak up” I told her. “By all means, he’s also broken” I told her.

“What?” she sniffled as she wiped away her tears.

“He feels really bad about you leaving him. Why did you tell him?” I asked.

“Nothing, I just said that maybe we shouldn’t see each other anymore” she said between sobs.

“Em, I hate to break it to you” this wasn’t going to be nice “I was going to break up with Drake” she looked at me.

“Really?” I nodded. “Yes, that’s why I told you the why not that had been swimming in my head for a while, I never meant for you to take it seriously” I commented.

“Now, because of you I found out what a terrible thing I would’ve done” I told her. She looked at me puzzled. I took out of my back pocket Drake’s letter, unfolded it and gave it to her.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Mike feels so strongly about you too” I told her.

“Are you saying I should go back to him?” she asked me, clearly confused.

“I’m saying you should do what makes you happy” I corrected her, and smiled.

“I’m happy when I’m with Mike” she said. “You know what to do” I smiled again.

“Thanks, Allie” she told me. I didn’t bother correcting her.

“You coming tonight, then?” I asked her, I knew they had plans, but I wasn’t going.

“Yeah, I’ll get ready” I hoped that meant cleaning herself up.

“Great” I told her. “Tell the guys hey from me, and make sure that you and Mike are on the same page” I asked her. She smiled again.

“You’re not coming?” she asked me. I shook my head.

“I’d got exam on Tuesday, have to study a lot” I told her. “But we’ll see each other next week, or you can come by my dorm anytime you want” I told her. She nodded eagerly.

I hugged her one last time and then went out.

Downstairs, I saw that this place really was huge. A blonde came up to me,

“Like, who are you?” she asked me very rudely. “The party’s outside” I wanted to smile to her face and say that I didn’t care for their stupid party.

“OH, I’m sorry,” I said bubbly. “like, do you know, like, where the bathroom is?” I asked too happily and in a pitchy voice. I tried not to snort at myself.

“Over there” she pointed to a door not far from where I stood.

“Thanks a lot” I smiled again and turned. I then unclenched my jaw to prevent myself from laughing and walked to the bathroom.
