Epilogue
Six years later
"MAX! I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU! I GOD DAMN HATE YOU!" I yelled, giving his arm what I hoped was a bone-crushing squeeze. The cool metal of the ring on his finger made me dig my nails further into his arm. "WHY ME?"
"PUSH!"
"I AM PUSHING, DAMN IT!" I yelled at the obstetrician.
"Katie, be nice to the doctor. She's trying to help you, and she's delivering our baby on Christmas day," said Max, before I gave him a dirty look.
"Who's side are you on anyway?"
"Hey! You're the one who wanted a natural birth!"
"And you're the one who didn't want to know the sex of the baby! I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF THIS CHILD IS A GIRL OR A BOY!"
He began singing, "Natural biiirth!"
"NOT THIS NATURAL, DAMN IT!"
"You've had too much eggnog," he stated.
"MAX! If you do not shut up right now, I will DIVORCE you! UNDERSTAND? DIVORCE YOU!"
"Katherine, ignore your husband, and PUSH!"
"Fine," I said, and then a deafening scream ripped from my throat, probably causing everyone within a five-mile radius to flinch.
"ONE MORE!"
"AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGHHH!!"
"Okay. Okay. Katherine, you're doing great. Come on, just this last one, and the baby will come out," said the doctor. I was panting heavily, too tired to push. "Katherine, think of all those people waiting for news outside."
"Okay," I breathed, and I pushed one last time. "MY GOD! IT HURTS!"
And with that, the sound of crying filled the room.
"Congratulations! It's a girl!"
"WHAT?" I yelled, forgetting about my pain. "I want to hold her! Max, we have a daughter!"
A look at my husband showed how emotional he had become. He was wiping a tear of joy from his eyes as he bent down and kissed me.
The doctor gave me my daughter –my daughter! - to hold, and I melted just looking at her features.
"What do you think we should name her?" I asked, cooing over my baby.
"She's gorgeous," Max breathed, leaning down, giving our child his finger, and letting her grasp it.
"Natalie Abigail Stevens," I said.
He looked up. "What?"
"Let's name her Natalie Abigail Stevens."
"Yeah. She does look like a Natalie, doesn't she?"
"Yeah, she does," and with that, the nurse took Natalie out of my arms to clean her.
An hour later
Natalie was back in my arms, except now instead of just Max with us, there were over fourteen people crammed into my tiny hospital room.
"My god, Katie, she looks just like you!" said Addie, coming up to me to coo at Natalie and pinch her cheeks.
Josh, who'd by now become Addie's fiancée, came up to me after Addie, gave me a kiss on the cheeks, and whispered in my ear, "I always knew you and Max would make it."
I smiled. "So did I."
