Tell Me a Story

Chapter 3: Tableau

A thoroughly soaked Laci opened the door to her apartment and tried her best to creep inside without making too much noise. An equally wet Rob followed her, soft squeaking sounds accompanying his footsteps. Laci shut the door behind her and felt along the left side of the doorframe. Her fingertips brushed against a light switch. She counted switches until she found the one she was looking for; she flicked it on. A warm golden glow fell upon the entryway of the apartment.

Laci tip-toed towards her living room, she was greeted by the sight of the sleeping Nia, Marie, and Ethan; they were snuggled together under a pile of blankets and pillows. Nia’s head was lying on Marie’s lap, whose own head rested on Ethan’s shoulder as his rested atop hers.

The brunette smiled at the sight of her younger sisters curled up together as she carefully brushed her hair out of her face. She turned around and motioned for Rob to follow her. She stealthily crept through the living room and down the hallway, towards her bathroom and her linen closet. Reaching the desired destination, she opened the closet, which creaked quietly in protest, and retrieved two of her thickest towels.

She gently threw one at Rob, pitching it so it would cover his head when it landed. When the towel landed, he made a strangled noise of protest. He gripped the edges of the fluffy pink towel, revealing his drenched blond hair and eyes that plaintively asked, ‘What have I done wrong NOW?’

Laci giggled in return, muffling them with her own towel. When she finished, she began lightly rubbing her hair and upper arms, trying her best to remove as much of the wet as possible.

When Rob had dried had dried himself to his satisfaction, he resumed his previously interrupted activity: surveying the living room and the people it contained. Now that he was unhampered by his bangs, which had beenplastered to the right half of his face, he was able to fully appreciate the sight before him. “What do you suppose they were doing Laci-love? The only clue I can see is that bowl over there and the probability of that making someone fall asleep in those positions is next to none.”

“I dunno, but I’m sure they’ll tell us a wonderful tale when they wake up. Now help me clean up all of this water! I don’t want it staining my floor."

Tableau: A picture, as of a scene

Enjoy the holiday season everyone, I leave you now with a Meaningful Quote,

"The best thing to give to your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity."-Francis Maitland Balfour

Until next time,
