Forbidden Heaven
Rayne felt herself falling, her eyes shut tightly waiting for the impact she knew was coming. However, when she didn’t feel anything, her eyes fluttered open and she found herself out of breath as she stared into startling blue-grey eyes. She was pulled upright by the man who caught her from falling. He was breathtakingly handsome, she watched as his ebony black hair fell in front of his eyes, nearly shielding them from being seen, and his broad shoulders and strong physique outlined by his strong hold on her waist to help steady her on her feet.
A frown marred his handsome features as he snapped, “Watch where you are going.”
Instantly, she snapped back to reality, surprised at his harsh tone.
Frowning herself, she answered, “Excuse me. You also need to watch where you are walking, besides I was going to thank you, but I guess there’s no need seeing how inexcusably rude and unreasonable you are being.”
With that said she turned on her heel and stalked off. Few seconds later, she glanced at her watch and cursed under her breath.
“Damn it, I’m going to be late for work if I don’t get a move on,” she muttered.
Today felt like a great day to Rayne as walked inside the grand building of Knight Enterprises. She smiled at the receptionist who in turn smiled back and congratulated her. Confused, she shook her head and stepped into the elevator, beside a plump man dressed in a finest business suit who scowled at her appearance. She was wearing a black suit jacket, underneath was a black off the shoulder nylon top with black jeans faded at the thighs and three inch, heeled boots. Her waist length chestnut brown hair tied up in a tight bun with few strands falling out around her graceful neck and her eyes, insinuated
Shrugging inwardly, she pressed number seven on the elevator, and smiled up at the man, who in turn smirked at her as he pressed the highest number, twenty-three. She sighed disgustedly to herself, she hated men like him; those who acted like they owned the world.
She stepped out as the elevator doors opened, breathing a sigh of relief. Placing a smile on her face she walked on to the locker room. She was confused as everyone she met on her way congratulated, nonetheless, she kept smiling.
“Hey Jenna,” she greeted her friend.
“Rayne!” exclaimed Jenna, enveloping her friend in a bone-crushing hug.
Rayne patted her back. “A-air…” she rasped.
Jenna pulled back, smiling sheepishly at her friend. “Heh-heh… sorry.”
Rayne only shook her head and turned to place her handbag into her locker. “So, how was your date yesterday Jen?”
“Amazing,” breathed Jenna. “James took me to an Italian restaurant, where he had arranged a candlelight dinner for the two of us.”
Chuckling, Rayne turned to see Skye, her friend of twelve years walking towards them in hurried steps.
“Hey Skye, do you know why everyone seems to be… I don’t know, congratulating me today?”
“Yes, you are being promoted, isn’t that brilliant?” Skye gushed.
The smile on Rayne’s face dropped a little, all of a sudden, the day didn’t feel so good. “Promoted? To where? Why?”
“You’ll be working for Mr. Devon Knight as his secretary,” announced Skye, smiling brightly.
Rayne gulped. “You mean the Devon Knight, the ruthless owner of Knight Enterprises? I’m working for him?” she squeaked.
Skye nodded, smiling brightly at her friend, unaware of her discomfort.
“But I don’t want to be promoted, I’m happy working where I am,” said Rayne.
“Rayne, you’ll be earning a lot more than you are now and besides, you have your little brother to look after and pay for his education,” explained Skye in a reassuring tone.
Rayne looked helplessly at Jenna, before turning back to Skye. “But… why me?”
“Mr. Knight’s previous secretary resigned and he needs a secretary with more experience, and you were the first choice, since you’ve been working here for the past five years.”
“And they have been the best five years of my life, I’ve enjoyed working for Mr. and Mrs. Tai, they have been the best bosses ever,” cried Rayne.
Skye smiled reassuringly at Rayne. “I’m sure you’ll enjoy working for the new boss. Come on, you have to hurry up, Mr. Knight doesn’t like tardiness and we don’t want you to be late for your first day now do we?”
”Besides, you have no reason to worry, Skye is the second secretary with you,” added Jenna
Skye pushed Rayne towards the elevator and waved at her as the doors started to close.
“All the best Rayne, make us proud!”
Rayne tried to smile through her uneasiness, but inside she was quaking with nerves. She slumped against the walls as soon as the doors closed, but before she had a chance to regain herself, the elevator doors opened again to show a grand waiting lounge decorated with marble flooring, two elegant chandeliers swooped down from the high ceiling. A large cream colored couch ran along the wall of the waiting lounge. A cream coloured wall, which looked like a reception area, was seen on the left hand side of the lounge, with a gold plate at the front saying ‘Secretary’.
As she walked forward, she could see two leather chairs, a glass desk with two modern, standard computers.
She stopped in front of two heavy oak doors decorated with gold handle bars. Raising a hand, she closed her eyes and knocked hesitantly on the door. Hearing no response, she opened the door and walked forward only to smack into a plump figure and fall on her backside.
She raised her eyes and glared at the man, who she recognized as the same man she was with in the elevator.
“Watch where you are going,” he growled.
Her glare hardened as she retorted, “You watch where you are going, that way you won’t have small women smacking into your large form and falling on their butts.”
He simply stepped around her and walked off, leaving her to glare and curse after him. Standing up, she brushed invisible dust off her shoulder, before turning around and seeing her new boss for the first time.
She felt her heart stop and her eyes widening and her jaw dropping as she gazed at the man standing before her, in black slacks, white, long sleeved shirt and suede shoes.
“You!” she whispered in disbelief.
