Human”

Blood pours from the sky,
Staining every soul
Bound to this sunless field of murder.

I see the man beside me raise his face
To the clouds and open his mouth,
Drinking deeply of death.

Only rain—water masks deceit—
Plays before his wasted eyes, as he watches but
Ignores the streaking dye.

Rotting flesh falls from his
Hands to the ground, muddied with dirt and blood,
But he feels nothing, only numbness.

Agonized screams fall through his
Ears and leak out, dribbling to his shirt collar, because
He doesn’t know they are human.

I watch him drink the devil’s wine,
Thirsty for pain and deception, and I run because
I don’t think he is human.
