A Night of Accidental Confessions

He looks at his friend from where he's positioned himself on her bathroom's doorframe. "You're beautiful," he whispers in a shallow breath to the girl changing her appearance to her definition of presentable. She always looked presentable to him, along with always beautiful and natural.

"What?" the girl asks as she turns from her propped up pose on the sink counter, "What did you say?"

"You're my best friend, did you know that?" he asks. It wasn't that he didn't want her to know how beautiful she was –if it was possible that she didn't already know- or that he wanted to ignore anything she asked him, but he didn't want to answer her now and have her not understand. She was his best friend anyway and he'd never told her yet so why not state the true facts.

"But what about Akane and Goro?" The beauty asks.

"Goro is my best guy friend and Akane might be nice to talk to and understanding but they have each other. They'll always be teenage lovers but who do I have when they cuddle up and make out?" He explained even though he knew she also knew all of this but for some reason he thought she was playing stupid when she really was just being an insecure girl.

"But why me, Akio? Why not all the other girls you attract?"

"Well there are so many reasons. You should really be asking me why not you over them," he tells her with a smile. She just continues looking at him while her eyeliner hangs limply in her hand, "I might have different relationships with each of them but they're all based on flirting. With you, it's different. All the other girls try so damn hard but you don't.

"Akane told me one time how all the other girls seem to try so hard for my attention and that most of the 'relationships' with them is based on them keeping everything going. She also said that you don't do that and she helped me realizing things through that. She even said she wonders how you could affect me if you actually tried as hard as they do for my attention. I think you wouldn't end up feeling insignificant and incomparable, you'd realize that they try too hard and maybe that you don't try hard enough… not that you have to try anyway.

"We have chemistry, a bond, some sort of connection between you and I. You fulfill every sort of role I could imagine. Sometimes you'll act like a mom," he says.

"Oh." is what she whispers.

"Huh?" he questions until he realizes his mistake so easily because he knows her that well, "No, not like that. I don't think of you in the motherly-way but sometimes you scold me and I can't help but laugh and think of my mom doing that. Then there are times when you're like a relative I only see at holidays and hardly know anything about, that’s when I want to know you more. You annoy me like I guess a sister would, but I stand you anyway. I talk to you without awkward pauses because you're my friend. What makes you one of my best friends' is that I can tell you my secrets and tell you when how I feel and I want to

"I can joke around you and attack you with my dirty and smelly socks because even though you try to always appear sophisticated and in control, you're not. It's nice knowing you can be free around me like that, like I'm special and that's how I know I care about you. I want to be special to you. The only time you should worry about me having emotions is when I stop caring about you. I'd be worried too, actually.

"I might flirt with you like I do every other girl and I might even fool around with them more but that's because I respect you. I can't treat you like I treat the other girls because I won't lead you on and hurt your feelings, even if I have, I don't try to. I always do my best to make it up to you if I do, anyway. You're not just like any other girl so I can't flirt with you like I would with any other girl. You’re not the 'Other Girl', you're The Girl."

"What are you saying, Akio? Are you trying to tell me something or have you just missed a role on purpose?" She asks him with a playful grin, though her words were serious.

"You're too impatient, you have to wait."

"I'll wait, but you're just being lazy." goes the good-humored conversation.

"Shut up or I'll get too lazy to finish. I might end up falling asleep on you and then push you over into the shower, because you-are-a-push-over." He says in staccato breaths.

"Fine. Just admit you're a pushover too so we can be pushovers together and then I'll shut up." She negotiates while brushing a Cheshire cat grin off her face and some strands of shiny, sleek and black hair behind her ear.

"No, it's O.K. I'll just start talking and you'll shut up." he tells her.

She fakes a sigh before saying, "Damn, you know me too well. Fine, go on."

He takes a deep breath before stretching and saying, "Oh, I don't know. I think I might fall asleep instead!"

She once again dons her catty grin and gestures for him to go on with her hands and an expression he reads as 'tell me or else I'll think of some evil, yet genius, idea that I think you wouldn't want me to follow through with'.

"What were we talking about again?" he asks. He watches as the beauty's lips frown and her mouth open to tell him he knows damn well what they were talking about.

So typical of him, she thinks as her frown deepens with fake displeasure.

"Aren't you going to tell me? I don't think I can finish if I don’t know what it is I’m finishing and I’m sure you know."

"Uff," she grunts. "You're supposed to tell me the last role that I either am or not."

"Which is?" he asks. He wanted to take his time. Stalling as a guy's next best friend when he was trying to tell a girl something important.

"You're not as stupid as you appear, Akio! Tell me now before I turn away from you and finish with my make-up." she demands as she turns back to the mirror and lifts her eyeliner back to her naturally black lashes.

"Whoa, wait." he tells her while his reflexes and hormones make him grab her slender and pale wrist, "Weren't you listening? Who's going to know anything if you don't listen because we both know I'm not going to pay attention. I told you: you don’t need make-up."

Her lips formed the cat-like smirk, once again, and she asked him, "Aren't you going to tell me why that is or will you tell me the other answer?"

"All right. You do play that role. You play every role I can think of except anything scarring like the two year-old boy that picks at the unidentified objects existing in his nostrils. Other then things like that, you are everything to me. I need you. I think of you romantically and I have before we became best friends. I'm not sure if our friendship comes before this but friendship can only go so far before it becomes romantic feelings and romantic emotions are so much more fulfilling. What do you say to that? Will you be the one I'll always have, no matter what happens? Will you be to me what Akane is to Goro?"

She slowly drops the eyeliner tube lightly on the sink counter, turns toward him, wraps her arms around his neck and gives him a kiss as beautiful as any human being is, as beautiful as she was and as he was, and as beautiful as they were together with lips firmly attached to lips.

"I love you too, Naomi," he declares after breaking away for as long as it takes for him to tell the beauty those five words and then reattach their mouths.

"You know what Akane would say right now?" she asks him between another kiss.

"What? 'Awww'?"

"Yeah. I can imagine it now."

"Do you know what Goro would say?"

"You mean other then 'ew'? He would say something like 'Yeah! Make out! Not enough kissing! Come on!' I agree with him actually but I'm not done talking yet. I know what they would both agree on."

"What?" he asks in between placing feather-light kisses to her jaw.

"They would both say something sexual, like 'get it on!' or 'here's a pack of condoms, guys'."

"True." he admits and then places a kiss on her forehead.

"I love you," she finally tells him the obvious, but needs to be heard, statement at the exact moment a short bell goes off downstairs where Naomi's date waits.

He waits for an hour before giving up and leaving. Her date hopes she's just got some music playing too loud but it's the sound of love that is the reason why her date is disappointed when he finds out that's why she stood him up.

A/N: I know it may come off as cheesy but when is romance not?

Anyway, the names are all Japanese and the meanings actually have to do with the characters so you could look them up and find out a bit more about them if you want. I just wanted to do something different and I'm sick of thinking up names.
