Another whimper.

Cold and cruel laugh.

“I can do whatever I want with you; both of you.”

A roar of pain and crash of furniture.

“Not while I’m still breathing!”

The crack of a handgun, then more silence.

“Kai?”

Hard breaths and staggering footfalls.

“Kai, is that you?”

A dull thump and hoarse breathing.

“Yes, sweetie; it’s me.”

Sobs of relief.

“Don’t ever leave me!”

Another crack of the handgun.

“It’s too late for that!”

Maniacal laughter and the stench of blood.
