Man, I loved her. I still do. But I was too much of a chicken to do anything, except hope and wish. She was my best friend, my partner in crime, and I thought we were a perfect match. Of course, I saw some signs that she liked me too. The way her eyes lighted up whenever she saw me, trying to make up excuses to hang out, and of course we talked for hours every night on the computer. This continued all through freshman year. However, our sophomore year, I saw less of the signs, and less of her. We still hung out, and had a great time, but I felt like I was losing her. That’s when I sucked up the courage to do something about it- I was going to ask her out. It was the day of homecoming, and she came running up to me smiling.

I have something to say.” we both blurted out at the same time.

Go ahead.” I told her.

Haden Bailey asked me out!” she said, her face glowing.

I was stunned. It felt as if time stopped.

That’s…That’s great Cam. Really great. I’m so happy for you.” I stuttered. I could barely speak.

She put her hand on my shoulder. “Thanks Mark. You’re a good friend.”

And with that, I watched her walk off.

I was late. I was too late.

“Ok, I need my Physics book, and my Trig book.” I muttered to myself as I opened my locker.

Suddenly, I felt my cell phone vibrate in my pocket. I looked around, making sure there were no teachers, and pulled it out. It was a text from Cam’s best friend Lily.

Something’s wrong w/Cam. Won’t talk 2 me. U try please? She’s by the gym on the bench.

I quickly grabbed my books and ran off to the gym. When I arrived, I found her sitting on the bench, with her face buried in her hands.

“Cam, what’s the matter?” I asked as I sat down beside her.

She looked up. Her eyes were red and puffy, and there were mascara streaks running down her face.

“He broke up with me.”

“What?” I said with anger raising in my voice.

“Haden, she said in between sobs, broke up with me.”

“Cameilla, I’m sorry. I…I don’t know what to say.” I calmly said to her, as I put my arm around her.

“I wasted two years on him! Two years! She said, choking back the tears. I really thought he was the one. I guess he was just the one to break my heart.”

I stood up. “Where’s he at?”

“Who?” she questioned.

“That bastard. Haden.”

Her eyes widened, as she stood up.

“Mark, please don’t do anything. I’m fine. Well, I’ll be fine.”

I turned around, ignoring everything she had just said, and went off to find Haden.

He’s going to wish he never messed with Cam’s heart.

“Mark, screamed Cam in the distance, Mark!”

It was too late. I had already found Haden. He was leaned up against another girls locker.

“Hey Haden!”

He turned around, and gave me a confused look.

“Uh..Hey?”

I grabbed his shirt. “What the hell do you think your doing?”

He whispered into my ear. “I’m trying to get some dude, can’t you tell?”

This is the last straw.

I winded my arm back, and punched him in the face. Hard.

He slid down the locker, his hands around his nose.

“Yeah Haden, I can tell. I also can tell you broke my best friends heart. What comes around goes around.”

Haden glared his eyes at me. “You better watch your back.”

Suddenly, I heard Cam’s voice.

“No Mark, he doesn’t have to watch his back. ‘Cause, I’m behind him. And I’m sooo over you.”

I turned around and smiled. There she stood, with her long blonde hair in a pony tail, and her blue eyes sparkling.

“Mark, thank you. I don’t know what to say.” Cam said staring straight into my eyes.

“Well, I have something to say.” I grabbed her by the waist, and pulled her closer to me. I leaned into her and gently kissed Cam on the lips.

“Remember sophomore homecoming?” I asked, still holding her.

“Hah, boy do I remember.” she said still thoroughly confused at what had just happened.

“Well, when I said I had something to say, I was going to ask you something.

She raised one eyebrow. “What was it?”

I smiled. “The same thing I’m going to ask you now. I took her by both hands. Camellia, will you be my girlfriend?”

The girls in the hallway around us awed.

“I have something to say.” she announced to me.

“Go ahead.” I told her.

“Mark Lewis asked me out!” she said her face glowing.

“That’s…That’s great Cam. Really great. I’m so happy for you.” I said while trying not to laugh.

She put her hand on my shoulder. “Thanks Mark. You’re a good friend.”

And with that we walked off, hand in hand.

“You know Mark, I always liked you. Even when with I was with Haden.” she said looking up at me.

I smiled.

I wasn’t late. I was right on time.
