.: My Popular Stepbrother +.
.: Chapter 1 +.
I promise nothing. So here it is, maybe the start of a great story :D
Summay: Kacey's life was perfect the way it was. Why did her father have to marry the mother of the most popular guy at her school? Why does everyone suddenly notice her now? And WHY is her stepbrother's best friend starting to look hot?
.: Enjoy +.
He IS the school’s idol.
But I never ONCE thought he’d become my stepbrother and he and his mother would move into our house.
Blake, my new stepbrother, gave me a charming smile that my best friend, Kelsey, would die to see. He fit quite nicely at my house. It was a reasonably large house that’s fit for a family of at least 8. My father Eric, a very popular and smart doctor, certainly doesn’t mind spending the money he has.
He’s tried very hard to entertain me with new things after my mother passed away. But I’ve never minded being an only child. It was quiet. And I liked quiet.
That’s one of the reasons why I hated Blake. He’s going to take away the quietness of our house.
As Blake stepped into my room to look around, his mouth widened slightly. “Wow… you’re a neat freak, Kace.”
“My name’s Kacey. And I like to keep things clean. Got a problem?” I said, closing the book I was reading. I narrowed my eyes at him and hoped he’d take the hint and leave. But his smile just widened.
I wanted to smack him.
“Is this how you treat your new brother?” He walked in and threw the neatly stacked books that were on my bed onto the floor as he took a seat where they had been.
OMG. Die.
“How come we’ve never met at school. You attend Adam’s High, right?” He asked, not caring for the amazingly beautiful works of literature he’d just tossed to the ground.
“Unfortunately.” I answered. “One reason might be considering we’re not in the same grade. You’re a year older than me.” And maybe because you’re on the top of the popularity chart while I’m at the lowest. Not that I’m complaining.
I’m not.
“Really? I thought you were 17 like I am.” Blake answered, a surprised look on his face.
“I’m 16, genius. Could you please leave my room now? I’d like to continue reading my book.” I nodded towards the unfinished book in my hand. I was itching to finish it.
His eyes slowly widened as he glanced at my book. He swore colorfully.
I frowned. “What’s wrong?”
“How many pages are in that book!?” He asked, amazed.
“How many? It’s only about 600 pages or so.” I answered, not understanding his reason for surprise.
“600? And you’re gonna read all that?” What kind of a question was that?
“That’s what you do when reading a book, right?”
“So you’re a nerd…”
A NERD? I’m a NERD? He just called me a nerd…
I pushed him off my bed. He caught his balance and stood up, innocently saying, “What?”
“Get out of my room, you brainless twit!”
He raised an eyebrow. “What’s a twit?”
“OUT!” I stood up and pushed him out of my room shutting the door after him.
The first day he and his mother have arrived here and this is how it ends up. I can’t stand the thought of how it’ll be at school on Monday tomorrow.
I had black eyes from staying up so long to read it. I think I fell asleep at around 4 AM. But I still managed to wake up before everyone else in the house.
I heard footsteps coming towards the kitchen. I took my eyes off the book and glanced at the door that led to the hallway. Trisha, Blake’s mother and my stepmother, walked in.
She was a beautiful woman who had the same blonde hair that Blake had. But his eyes were light blue, unlike her light green eyes.
She was a very sweet woman who had already started to grow on me. She gave me a smile as she said, “Good morning, Kacey. Did you sleep well?”
I nodded. “Yeah. Good morning.”
“Do you make your own lunch or do you buy it from the cafeteria?” She asked, sitting down besides me.
“I make it. The food in the cafeteria is too greasy. I don’t need the extra trans fat.” I muttered.
“I see. Do you want me to make you the food?” She seemed a little too eager. So I answered “Sure.”
Trisha stood up. “Great. What would you like?”
“An apple and a cheese sandwich please.” I felt strange requesting this from someone I haven’t really talked to enough.
“Coming right up!” She twirled around and started to dig through the fridge.
Blake walked into the kitchen, yawning. He still hadn’t bothered to change into his outside clothes like I had. “Mornin’” He murmured as he yawned for the third time.
“Good morning, sweetie. Your lunch money’s in your room on the table. What do you want for breakfast?”
Blake sat down besides me. I ignored him and turned back to my book.
He looked over my shoulder and said. “I’ll have what she’s having.”
I glared then pushed my chair away from him.
Copycat.
I didn’t know any of them but they talk loud enough for me to hear their whole life story. The group of three consisted of two guys and a girl, who was short. The guys were Mitchell and Sam and the girl was Sandra. They weren’t popular but they weren’t as low on the charts as I was. So they didn’t talk to me. And I didn’t talk to them. And we lived happily ever after.
Until Blake came.
Their mouths dropped open as they saw Blake and I together walking towards them. Sam, a tall guy in Blake’s grade who had short bushy hair came up to us. Well, Blake mostly.
“Are you guys dating?” was the first question that came out of his mouth.
I wanted to vomit.
“No.” Blake answered, unmoved by the question and completely uninterested. “She’s my new stepsister.” He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me along with him past Sam and towards the bus stop. I shrugged his arm off and muttered, “Don’t touch me.”
Blake grinned at me then slipped his hands into his pockets, glancing at the school bus that approached us.
Something was wrong.
The bus looked… titled?
Just then I realized what was happening. Everyone on the bus was pressed against the side closest to us. Closest to Blake. Everyone was pressed against the windows, flashing smiles at Blake and waving.
I stepped onto the bus. Everyone who was anyone sat in the back but I always took the second seat from the front of the bus on the right side. Sam, Mitchell and Sandra walked onto the bus then Blake followed. Everyone on the bus chorused their Good morning!s to Blake.
And then the bus fell quiet.
Blake had sat down besides me.
I frowned slightly at him then turned away. I heard Sam tell the other, “She’s his new stepsister.”
Soon, murmurs along the line of “Who the hell is she?” rang throughout the bus. Can’t they at least make sure I DIDN’T hear?
I took out my book and started reading. Blake leaned against the seat, ignoring the many invitations from the others on the bus to sit with them instead of me.
Stupid, annoying Blake.
It was like that for the rest of the 15-minute trip. When the bus arrived at school and I stepped off the bus, I walked into the school, hugging my library book, which I had just finished. I was planning to return it to the library before heading to class. I had about 10 minutes.
“Kacey!” Two girls I’ve never met before stepped in front of me. Their names popped into my head immediately. Kelly and Laura. A.k.a. Bitch and Bitch.
I’ve never ran into them before. They always just ignored my existence. Which was a good thing. They were some of the most admired girls at my school, but I don’t like them. I’ve heard plenty about them but never once cared.
But now, they were actually talking to me. “Uh, what do you want?” I asked, kind of rudely.
“Oh don’t be like that, silly.” Laura said, giggling. I’ve never wanted to kill somebody more than I did then.
“We just wanted to say good morning!” Kelly said, smiling. Kelly always had too much makeup on. Her blue eyes stuck out from underneath her black eyelashes and eye shadow.
“Uh… Okay. Good morning. Bye.” I walked past them.
“Wait Kacey!” Kelly called running after me to walk along side of me.
I didn’t wait. In fact, I sped up my pace hoping to lose them.
“So Kacey, I hear that you’re Blake’s new stepsister. You’re so lucky.” Laura said, smiling. Stupid fake bitch.
“That’s nice.” I muttered. “Anyways, I’m kind of busy. I need to go to the library to return a book. Good bye.”
Kelly stopped with Laura. “Okay,” Kelly said. “See ya later!”
Before turning the corner, I heard Laura ask, “We have a library?”
There was a small room in the end of the library with cushiony chairs that you sat in to read. This was where I spent my lunch. Here with my best friend, Kelsey, who loved books as much as I did.
As I took a seat in one of the chairs during lunch, Kelsey walked into the room and sat down, excited. Before lunch, Kelsey and I have no classes together so we only see each other during and after lunch. She seemed to have a lot to say today.
“Hey Kel-” I began to say but was cut off when Kelsey exclaimed, “Can I come over to your house?”
I blinked. “… Kelsey you can always come over, you know that.”
“Really? Really? Really?” She smiled.
“Yeah… Are you okay?” I frowned.
“Are you KIDDING me? I’m GREAT! I can’t WAIT to meet Blake!”
Oh.
So THAT’S what she’s after.
I sighed deeply. “Kelsey, he’s not that-”
“I can’t come over?” She gave me the puppy eyes and pouted.
“What? No- I mean. Of course you can. But-”
“YAY!” She jumped up and down.
I rolled my eyes. “You’re coming over to study though, right?”
She nodded. “Yeah, sure. I’ll study! After looking at BLAKE TAYLOR! Wait, wait, no he’s Blake Wright now. Your last name matches him SO well!”
“Kelsey! Ew! Stop being all lovey-dovey! We’re here to read!” I glared then leaned back in the beanbag chair and opened the new book I was starting.
She sighed and sat down on another beanbag next to me with her book. She cracked open her book and began to read as well, the smile never leaving her face.
After getting so into the story about 15 minutes later, I was startled when Blake appeared in the reading room. “Hey, Kace!” He grinned.
I blinked at him, surprised. “I didn’t think you knew where the library was.”
“Ouch. That hurts.” He frowned.
I shrugged, glancing at Kelsey who was in awe. What a girl.
I glanced back at Blake then noticed that he wasn’t alone. Behind him stood a boy I’ve seen far too often on posters in the school. His nickname was Ice because he was the champion in many winter competitions in the area. He knew how to snowboard and ski. He played hockey only on ice and loved the winter cold.
“This is Justin, my friend.” Blake introduced. Like I needed an intro. “Justin, this is Kacey, my stepsister.”
Justin turned to me and nodded. “Hey.” He glanced around, a bit annoyed at where he stood.
Whoa. Talk about a cold greeting. I could tell he disliked me there and then. “Nice to meet you.” I said. The fact that I didn’t mean it was a little too obvious.
Blake noticed the uncomfortable atmosphere and said, “Well then, I’ll see you around Kace.” He walked out with Justin.
“They’re SO cute!” Kelsey said, putting her hands together.
I sighed. “You’re pathetic. There’s nothing cute about either of them. Especially Justin.”
“What’s wrong with Justin? He’s the mysterious one. He defiantly has a lot of girls after him because of that.” She grinned. “He’s very hot too!”
“I don’t care about guys right now, okay? I just want to read.” I continued with my story.
Stupid Justin. Thinking he’s all that. He can kiss my-
I blinked. The bell rang. I had 5 minutes to get to class. I sighed then stood up, walking towards my locker with Kelsey.
I frowned, stopping in my tracks in the middle of the hallway. A small crowd surrounded my locker. As I stepped closer, pushing through the crowd, I saw what they were all staring at.
On my locker, someone had carved the words ‘NERD BITCH’ deep into my steal locker. That won’t be going anywhere soon.
I’m not sure why but those words hurt me. I hadn’t done anything to deserve such hate.
I glared at the people who were around me. “What are you looking at? Get lost!”
The students dispersed.
Before Blake had become my stepbrother, nobody knew about me, and now I’m suddenly the talk of the school!
Stupid Blake.
He blinked, confused, all the chairs around him filled up. All except the one right besides him. “Come again?”
“Before I used to have a quiet life and I used to care about getting good grades and finishing every book in the library but now I’m making enemies for God knows why and I’m sick and tired of being noticed! You’re totally ruining my life.” I glared.
The bus was quiet. Everyone was looking at us.
I hadn’t noticed everyone there. There were certainly a lot of people.
I started to feel uneasy.
“I didn’t mean to make your life miserable.” Blake frowned. “Sorry.”
I stopped. Just then it hit me. Blake was totally not the guy I thought he was. He was actually very self-effacing. He was nothing but kind and very thoughtful. I had always pictured him to be obnoxious and self-obsessed. But he isn’t. And I was blaming him for nothing but being who he is; a very likable and good looking guy.
“No.” I sighed, taking the seat besides him. “I’m sorry, I’m blaming you for something that isn’t your fault.”
Blake sighed then stood up, turning to the people around him. “Hey, could you all move to the back and give us room to talk?”
The others nodded, as they all scrambled to the back, but none of them spoke, anxious to hear our conversation.
This made me so uncomfortable, I decided not to talk at all.
Blake sat down again and glanced at me. He whispered, “I’m sorry if having me as your brother is a burden. Is there anything I can do?”
I frowned at him. “Yeah. Keep your crazy fan girls away from me and never bring your friends to our house.”
He grinned. “My friends usually just pop in without my say so. But I’ll make sure they stay clear of your room. Deal?” He held out his hand.
I smiled slightly and shook his hand. “Deal. Break it and I’ll break your neck.”
He didn’t hear me knocking. I glared. The phone had rung for him about 20 times today. Not once was it the same person. And 90 of the time the calls for him were from girls.
This phone call right now was from a guy. Justin. I could just tell because of his voice. He had that deep voice, but not too deep. It was kind of addicting…
“BLAKE!!” I screamed, my voice hitting a new high for me.
The music stopped as Blake opened the door. “Kacey? Are you okay?! What happened?”
“I’ve been knocking on your door for ever!” I growled.
“Oh- Yeah. Sorry about that. I like to listen to my music when it’s really loud and-”
I shoved the phone into his hands, not caring to hear the rest. “It’s Justin. Have fun.” I walked off as Blake answered his call.
Walking into my room, I closed the door behind me and took a seat on my bed. I picked up the book I had previously started in the library at school that day. I was almost half way through it.
It was another one of those romance books that I just couldn’t put down until I read the very last word.
The author structured the story beautifully, giving life to amazing characters, which somehow fall in love besides their differences.
I slowly closed the book as I thought. I wonder whom I’d fall in love with. I wonder what he would be like.
I’ve had a previous crush. Just once before. And I even had enough courage to confess.
But of course, my life isn’t a romance novel. And I was crushed.
I dropped myself backwards on my bed. I wasn’t ugly. I mean, sure, I had the darkest black hair imaginable and deep dark black eyes with pale white skin. And so maybe I was a little normal and I didn’t have the perfect body, or a great chest, or backside, but I was still pretty, right?
But what kind of guy would fall for me? Well, I know what kind wouldn’t. Justin Martello’s kind. He was everything I had imagined him to be. He was impolite and disrespectful. I didn’t understand how Blake and Justin got along at all. They were polar opposites.
I’ve been hearing their names since kindergarten, having never changed school even once. Adam’s High offered schooling from kindergarten till the 12th grade and both Blake and Justin have been the superstars since then. They had that sort of I’m-A-Leader feel around them that made you want to follow them. It’s not that they were smart, they were. Well, reasonably anyways.
Justin had grades that could match mine, which were very good. I was top in all my classes, a typical smart girl. I was surprised when I heard about Justin’s talents in schoolwork as well.
Blake, on the other hand, isn’t into schoolwork, but his mother is. And she keeps a tight hold on him to study more all the time. And he does. And he gets good marks. But not as good as mine. And Justin’s.
I feel a bit more anger towards Justin than Blake because I feel like he’s at the top at both the brains and looks in our school.
And although I hated competition, I hated to lose even more.
My thoughts were suddenly cut off as I heard the telephone ringing once more. I groaned. Blake’s music was on, again. And I was stuck answering the phone, again.
Irritated at having to get up another time, I slammed the door behind me as I walked out of my room. I walked towards the living room where the telephone was and grabbed it. “Hello?”
“Hello, Kacey?” a deep voice answered.
It was Justin. Again. “Hey. Just a second I’ll go get Blake for-”
“Wait! I don’t want to talk to Blake.”
I blinked. “What?”
“I want to talk to you.”
