First Step: Introduction

"Ana, this is Cathy."

I still remember the first time she ever looked at me. So many things seemed to flit in and out in of those dark orbs the moment our eyes met.

Disdain? Curiosity? Or fear, like me? I wasn't sure at the time what she thought about me, but I decided not to judge her from that first glance. I observed her warily.

She nodded curtly and gave a few formal introductions, and I did likewise. After that, I sat down with the girl who had introduced me to her, and the three of us had our very first lunch together. All three of us strangers in this new school.

From then on I kept my distance for a while, and so did she.

I never really talked to her much. We didn't have any of the same classes together, so we really had no reason to. As for the friend who had introduced me, we never got close either, but we were closer than Cathy and I were. At least for a while.

It's funny how time can turn things completely upside-down.
