No one ever really pays much attention to a dog, especially if said dog is scruffy and unkempt.

And if said dog is sitting on a corner, who could care?

But sometimes there’s more to something than that meets the eye. Not that anyone notices, hurrying on their way, doing something, going somewhere, sparing one glance and no more, as if each is precious.

Except one girl, one girl who fearlessly walks up to a dog, and pets it. Who gives the dog not just a glance, but a hug. Who takes the dog home, to the surprised shriek of her mother, to the angry disapproving harrumph of her father.

Who looks up with plaintive, just-can’t-say-no eyes and asks “Can I keep him?”
