0 AVERY

Avery sat silently in his dormitory room. The School was just about to get out in the following week and he’d return home to his family. He was rather excited; he was tired of this school. He was number one in his class which instantly led to many having a reason to dislike him, but it wasn’t even that.

‘Defect.’

That was the nickname the student body had given him; he was known to be the defect of the school. He was blind, but not only that, wouldn’t speak to many people if any. Most thought he was mute, and only did certain professors and a close friend of his knew he could speak.

It’d be hours of him sitting there before his dorm room door would open; his best friend, Lanais, trotting through. He didn’t have to guess that it was her, he had her smell, sound and all that memorized. He wasn’t obsessed or anything; it was just something that came naturally to him.

“There you are, Avery. Why are you sulking in your bed? We should do something, school is out for break this time next week and I won’t get to see you for a little while.” the door shut behind her.

Avery sighed gently, and when he knew no one was listening or outside the door he looked to, where he had though, was Lanais’ face. “Sorry,” his voice was soft, raspy, but soft. Almost like piano melodies being played perfectly to some sort of Love Song.

“I—what?” he had fully registered her sentence after a couple seconds, “won’t be seeing me? Why not? Are you going some place special this summer?”

This was odd for him, every summer it was with his family plus Lanais or the opposite. He knew that one summer she would not be there for him, but this? This summer?” when his… he couldn’t think of the last part, a shiver running over him.

“Sorry, Avery,” she started and sat over on her bed, “My parents are taking me to Their World, give me a little tour since that is where I want to live when I’m out of this place. Can’t stay here forever, you know.”

Avery gave a small smile, “That would be nice, in The School forever. Learning all we can about the world.”

“You can only learn so much inside these walls, Avery. Who knows, maybe this summer you’ll replace me and leave me in a heap of tears next year.”

Avery gave a small laugh, “Oh, that’ll be your punishment for leaving me. I will leave you for some dark and handsome male, leaving you and your girlish emotions in some classroom.”

Now it was Lanais turn to laugh as she then wrapped her arms around Avery’s neck and turned his head in the proper direction so he would be facing them, “Who said I had any of those nasty, girlish emotions?”
