The sound of my alarm clock woke me up. I opened my eyes, only to be greeted by the annoying sunshine seeping through my window. I groaned and shoved the pillow over my head. At least it muffled the sound of my alarm clock. Something about today was different. I pulled the pillow off my face and stared up at my ceiling. Was I forgetting something? I thought about it, but nothing came to mind. With a scowl, I grabbed my alarm clock and threw it against the wall. Well, at least the alarm stopped.

“Mom!” I shouted. “I need a new clock!”

I got into the bathroom before Lynette had a chance to get in there. I grabbed my toothbrush and turned on the radio that was sitting on top of the toilet.

Do you believe in magic in a young girl’s heart!” the song blared throughout the bathroom loudly. I yelped and shut the radio off. The volume of the music startled me. But something else surprised me. I stared at the radio curiously. That song…there was something about it…

I huffed and went back to brushing my teeth. How could I be interested in that song? I didn’t even like it.

I got downstairs, dressed and ready for school. I still wasn’t ready for life itself however. This could be because I tripped down the stairs for the umpteenth time. I’m going to start buying good luck charms. Maybe then the fact that I was born on Friday the 13th won’t affect my luck. I sat up and scratched my head. I really was forgetting something. But what was it? It was bugging me. Archie came and sat on my lap. He licked my face.

“Good morning to you too,” I muttered. I walked into the kitchen.

Everything seemed normal. Lynette dropped something on Archie’s head, Archie tripped Mom, Mom threw something, Dad ended up getting hit on the head. Same old same old. But something seemed different, I just couldn’t determine what though.

“Eat some breakfast Scarlet,” Mom shouted over the noise of Dad yelling, Archie howling, and Lynette screaming.

“That’s okay,” I told her. “I’ll eat at school.” Total lie. I never ate breakfast at school.

Ooh, I know what was different! So I was at my locker this morning. I tried desperately to get it to open, but I had no luck. Damn thing was stuck. Again. And while I was at my locker, Esperanza walked up to me. Only she walked up to me with David…HOLDING HANDS?

I quickly looked up from my locker and stared at Esperanza and David as they laughed with each other, holding one another’s hand. I stared wide-eyed, and the two of them noticed. They stopped walking, stopped laughing, but continued holding hands. We all exchanged an awkward silence.

“Did I miss something?” I finally spoke up. “When did this happen?”

Esperanza and David glanced at each other, thinking. Both of them looked back at me.

“We don’t know,” they both answered me in unison.

“We’re not sure what happened,” Esperanza said. “But…apparently we’re going out.”

“Funny thing is I can’t remember asking her out,” David told us.

I smirked. “Personally,” I said to Esperanza. “I think you can do better. But this is good.”

“She’s just jealous because she’s still boyfriendless,” David taunted. I gritted my teeth.

“Now be nice,” Esperanza giggled. “She is my best friend after all.”

“You can’t deny facts,” Joanna laughed loudly as she walked past us. “A loser like her will always be boyfriendless.”

“You little witch!” I snarled.

Joanna gasped offensively. “What did you call me?” she demanded.

“It’s true,” I laughed sarcastically. “We might as well throw a pointy black hat on you and give you a broom. You’re nothing more than a witch.”

Joanna glared at me. Her face slowly changed and she smirked wickedly down at me. “You’re more correct than you know,” she laughed as she waved her hand. Joanna walked away, still laughing. Esperanza, David, and I watched her with confused expressions. The bell rang, and Esperanza and David hugged each other. They parted ways, and Esperanza turned to me.

“Well muchacha, I’ll see you in second period,” Esperanza fare welled. She waved at me over her shoulder as she walked away.

I went to my Spanish class. I was greeted by Ms. Garcia, who said hello to me in Spanish. I sat in my desk on the other side of the classroom. The class started, but it seemed we were missing a student. There was an empty desk in front of me. Ms. Garcia didn’t seem to notice though. Funny, I don’t remember that desk being there. I don’t see why it was there if it was empty. I stared at the desk curiously as Ms. Garcia continued with her lesson. Something was missing. But what?

I sat in my bedroom that night, reading a book on my bed. Archie sat near my feet, snoring away. I shivered as a night breeze came into my room through the open window. I got up and went over to the window to close it. I stuck my head out to get a good glimpse of the moon that night. Instead I saw something else.

I couldn’t believe it. My eyes widened from surprise. Instead of simply looking at the moon I got to see someone fly across the sky…on a broom! I wasn’t able to make out the details. All I saw was a silhouette on a broom fly through the air. I slammed the window shut and turned on my heels. Archie perked his head up and stared at me.

“I think I just saw someone flying on a broom,” I said to my dog. He tilted his head.

Only witches fly on brooms. And witches aren’t real! There’s a simple explanation as to why I saw someone flying on a broom late at night from my bedroom window. I’m going crazy. Yeah, that has to be it.

It was the very next day. I was peacefully sleeping that morning, but it just so happened that I set my alarm clock early that morning. And I set it from the alarm to the radio. While I was snoozing my radio went off and the music played loudly in my ear.

Do you believe in magic in a young girl’s heart! How the music can free her whenever it starts!”

I quickly sat up where I was laying. I slammed my radio off. I stared at the clock, feeling frazzled. What was with that song? I swear, it was stalking me! Now that I was wide-awake I decided to get ready.

As it turned out, I was awakened earlier than usual that morning. So I thought I’d get on the computer and IM my cousin Jocelyn. Her screen name was GothJoce while I was ScarletColored.

GothJoce: Enjoying Arizona?

ScarletColored: Um, no. But hey, I still have three more years and then I can get the hell out of here.

GothJoce: Amen to that. Three more years and I can get away from Geniece.

ScarletColored: Same here. Can’t wait to get away from Lynette and Tobey.

I-Am-Shakira has logged on.

It just so happened that I-Am-Shakira was Esperanza. I was unaware that she got up this early in the morning.

I-Am-Shakira: Well good morning you two.

GothJoce: Hey Esperanza.

ScarletColored: How’s my best friend today?

I-Am-Shakira: Sleepy.

GothJoce: What time is it over there?

ScarletColored: Early.

GothJoce: Descriptive. Thanks.

I-Am-Shakira: I sense sarcasm in that sentence.

GothJoce: Lol. You’re good.

ScarletColored: Say guys…

GothJoce: What is it now?

I-Am-Shakira: Having another episode?

ScarletColored: I can feel the love. Not. Anyways, I have this nagging feeling that I’m forgetting something.

GothJoce: You too?

I-Am-Shakira: I’ve been feeling like that too.

ScarletColored: So I’m not the only one?

GothJoce: Thing is, I don’t know what I’m forgetting.

I-Am-Shakira: That’s the point of forgetting. You’re not supposed to remember.

GothJoce: You know what. Nya.

ScarletColored: Nice.

Our moment was interrupted when my sister stomped into the room. She glared down at me, acting like she wasn’t a morning person.

“Get off the computer,” Lynette demanded. “I want to get on.”

I sighed and turned back to the computer.

ScarletColored: Sorry guys. I have to get off.

GothJoce: Talk to you later.

I-Am-Shakira: See you at school.

ScarletColored has logged off.

I turned back to Lynette and gave her a frown. “There,” I sighed without so much as an argument. “You can get on now.”

I got out of the chair, sighing heavily to myself. Lynette placed her hands on her hips and looked down at me. “What’s wrong now?” she sighed.

I shook my head silently.

Lynette let out another sigh and turned me around to face her. “You know Scarlet, just because I don’t act like it you know I care about you,” Lynette said. I’m pretty sure I woke up this morning only to find myself in an alternate universe. “And if something is bugging you, you can tell me.”

I looked up at her. Lynette continued looking down at me with a serious expression. Her face softened and she smiled down at me. And surprisingly, I smiled back at her without being a smartass.

“I know,” I replied quietly. “But really Lynette, I’m okay.”

“All right then,” Lynette said. She ruffled my hair in a friendly sisterly manner. There was a moment of silence. Quickly we gave each other a hug. And just as quickly as it had happened, it ended. “We speak of this to no one!” Lynette warned, sounding like her old self.

I smiled and nodded in agreement. I went into the kitchen. Tobey was at the table, writing down notes.

“Lynette and Scarlet hugged!” my brother sang like he was taunting me.

I scowled at him as I scooped up my iPod that I left on the table the night before.

“Aren’t you supposed to be the mature one?” I snapped. Tobey rolled his eyes and returned to his notes. “No one checked the mail yesterday did they?”

Tobey shook his head as a reply.

“Fine, I’ll go get it,” I sighed.

I walked out of the kitchen and went over to the front door. I saw my mom from where I was. She was in the living room, cleaning. She also had the radio on and she was humming to it. Playing on the radio was my stalker song.

Do you believe in magic in a young girl’s heart!” the song played on the radio. My mom hummed to it. I quickly turned back to the door and rushed out of the house. To clam myself down, I stuck the ear buds of my iPod in my ears. I approached the mailbox and pulled the mail out. As I checked the mail I turned my iPod on. Without pressing any other buttons a song came on and blasted right in my ears.

Do you believe in magic! Believe in the magic of a young girl's soul! Believe in the magic of rock 'n' roll! Believe in the magic that can set you free! Oh, talkin’ ‘bout magic!”

I yelped and dropped my iPod and the mail. My iPod fell on the grass, pulling the ear buds out of my ears. I stared at the music player, staring widely at it. How was that song on my iPod? I never put it in my iPod! So why was it there? How did it get there? And what was with this song?

These are all rhetorical questions that don’t need to be answered.

“Is something wrong?” a voice asked. “You look startled.”

I looked up and stared at a fine specimen of a creature. Beautiful eyes, a lean body, dark fur. The boy walking the dog wasn’t bad looking either. He was holding on to a leash that kept his large, black and brown furred dog close to him. The boy was looking at me curiously with a pair of emerald green eyes. His hair was light brown, and brushed ever so slightly past his green eyes. His hair also went just a bit past his ears. His hair was neatly combed, and yet rebellious. He looked like a skater. He also looked like a musician. The boy was tall and slender, looking sort of muscular. He was wearing a brown sweater jacket zipped up halfway, barely revealing the black shirt with red writing on it underneath it. He had baggy, ripped, dark blue jeans on. He stuffed his free hand in the pocket of his jeans.

I had never seen this boy before. My guess was that he just moved to my neighborhood. I caught myself staring at him. One couldn’t help themselves but stare at this boy. I’ll try to say this in the most mannerly way possible: The boy was friggin’ hot! So much for mannerly. I shook my head slightly and bent over to pick up the mail and my iPod. As I reached for my iPod the boy grabbed it before I could. He smiled and handed it to me.

“You look frazzled,” he spoke up.

“I’m just being stalked by a song is all,” I mumbled. This caused the boy to laugh. His dog’s tail wagged. I pet the dog, smiling at it. “What’s your dog’s name?”

“Her name’s Charm,” the boy answered. The dog’s tail wagged faster when I pet it. “I think she likes you.”

“Hello Charm,” I cooed. I straightened up and looked back at the boy. “So did you just move to the neighborhood?”

The boy looked away, up at the sky. A smile slowly tugged at the corner of his lips. “Yeah, I just moved here with my family.”

“What school are you attending?” I questioned.

“Wilmont High,” the boy answered as he looked back at me.

I grinned broadly for him. “Really?” I exclaimed. “I go to that school.”

“You don’t say,” the boy laughed. “I guess this means we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other.”

“Guess so,” I agreed.

“Well then,” the boy said. He held out his hand for me. “My name’s Joshua Thatcher. Friends call me Josh.”

Can I just say, déjà vu. There was something about this boy that was familiar. He was also making me blush, what with him being very attractive and whatnot. And yet I managed to keep my cool. It felt like I’ve talked to him a million times before. But how could that be possible?

I grinned at him and shook his hand. “Hey Josh. I’m Scarlet,” I introduced.

“I’ll be seeing you around then Scarlet,” Josh fare welled as he and Charm took off walking. I watched as Josh and his dog walked away. Josh stopped in his tracks. Without turning around to face me Josh asked, “Hey Scarlet, do you believe in magic?”

Again with that song. At least he wasn’t singing it. Still, what a strange question.

“Magic?” I repeated. I took a moment to think about how to answer this question. I smiled to myself and looked back up. “Yeah, I do believe in magic.”

Josh stood where he was for a moment. “Cool,” he spoke up. He and Charm went on their way down the sidewalk.

I stayed near the mailbox as I watched the two of them make their way around the corner. Magic wasn’t something I usually believed in. I’ve never witnessed the process of hocus pocus spells myself. But there was something about Josh that made me decide that magic was real and that I believed. Well, now I knew for certain that love at first sight was real. And now, I guess I can honestly say I believe in magic. Heck, sure magic is real! All it needed to exist was a little bit of believing. And as long as someone believed, it would never die out.

“Magic,” I chuckled to myself, turning back towards my house and heading inside. “Magic is definitely real.”

Do you believe in magic in a young girls heart
How the music can free her whenever it starts
And it's magic, if the music is groovy
It makes you feel happy like an old time movie.”
