Dark Love
By: Amei
The syringe clattered to the floor. He stared in disbelief as the needle was pulled out of his arm, his now bleeding arm.
“It’s over,” she told him, “Your power over darkness is gone now.”
“S-s-so it’s true then; you weren’t bluffing when you said I was going to be human again.”
Kei shook her head; it was finally over. After all those months of destruction, she finally had him. He could finally die once and for all. She reached back with her free arm for her knife. She held it to his chest, ready to end it all; but she paused. For some reason, he couldn’t die yet.
“Why do you pause? I thought you would kill me if it was the last thing you did.”
She took the knife and plunged it into his chest, quickly pulling it out and backing away. He gasped, looking down at the bloody mess where his heart was supposed to be. In seconds, it turned black, forming back together. Her surprised hazel eyes flickered up to his expression. His eyes were still empty, emotionless, black voids; the serum hadn’t worked.
Kei slid down to the floor, accepting defeat. She was going to die. He was going to kill her. She didn’t blame him. They had been friends since their synthetic creation and she tried to murder him. But he had killed so many, caused so much destruction…
He was coming closer; she could feel the cold of the lifeless dark matter he was composed of.
“Just kill me already Shai, you know you want to.”
He crouched down to her level.
“Why would I do that?”
She looked up to him, his visible features emotionless. Ever since the transformation, his face had become angled instead of the basic sytho-soldier. His empty, black ringed eyes were another side effect, along with the black lines of taint creeping across from the right.
Kei scowled.
“Do you wish to torture me, just like the whole squadron on base 15B,” she spat back.
“Don’t be like that Kei,” he said while placing a hand on her cheek.
She cringed from the cold.
“Why?”
He didn’t reply.
“Why did you do it?”
There was another silence.
“Answer me damn it! Why did you do all of those horrible things?”
“You know what they did,” he replied, “You know what they did to me; they deserved to die.”
“What about all of those others you killed and tortured? What about the planet you sunk into a black hole; what about them?”
“They… it’s not my fault, you have to understand.”
“How can I understand something so psychotic?”
She went to move away, but she was held back. The shadow of the hull was holding her back.
“Let me go!” she ordered.
“Please, let me explain…”
She stopped struggling, understanding the futility in the act.
“You remember all of those months ago, when they tested me. The organics. It was nothing but pain and endless torture. They replaced every fiber in my body, destroyed every artificially made cell and replaced it with the darkness of space. They made me to be the ultimate weapon; it was them who made me this way.”
“That doesn’t make it right,” she said, tears streaming down her face.
He wiped the tear away with one of his lifeless fingers.
“But it was fair; they were going to make others this way Kei. I couldn’t let that happen. And I would have stopped but… I couldn’t. I was designed to kill, and it was impossible to stop. This dark power… it’s too much for me, I want it gone.”
“Then you should have come back; you could have been cured before you were this far.”
He shook his head.
“They would only do more tests on me, using me as only a pawn in their plan. That’s all we are to them, nothing. When we are disposed of, more are made. Now, I’m almost free, only bound by this dark power. Please Kei, don’t be angry.”
She looked down. Was it possible for him to feel regret? No. His emotion had been sucked away, replaced by malevolence. How could she forgive him? He had killed others, spilling so much blood on so many planets. There were so many screams of agony, of grief. It was too much for her to forgive.
But he was her best friend. They had shared so much together. No, she told herself, he wasn’t the same person he used to be. He was nothing but darkness now. He was just trying to trick her.
“Kei, please, I’m begging you. I will stop; I will give back the universe. I will stop all of this madness I created, I promise; just don’t…”
It was too good to be true; she couldn’t believe it, no matter how much she wanted to.
“I love you Kei.”
As soon as those words escaped his mouth, she was filled with even more disbelief. Syntho-soldiers weren’t made to feel emotion, yet she could. It was confusing. The entire galaxy was screwed up. Hell, maybe the universe. Ever since the year 7092, the humans from Earth had broken the law of nature and had destroyed the balance of the universe. Maybe it wasn’t his fault… Kei shook herself free of that thought; he was tricking her and she was falling for it.
“You know it’s possible,” his smooth voice continued, “We both experienced these emotions before, you know it’s true. And ever since I’ve been changed, I’ve actually felt like I was human, like I was more than just a tool that was thrown away after a few years. Kei, as soon as I give up control of the universe, you and I will be organics.”
She couldn’t reply; it was impossible. But Shai had done the impossible. He had destroyed the once-invincible, toxic planet, Earth, in less than a day.
“Please.”
The shadows lifted her up from the ground.
“Please Kei, love me back.”
She couldn’t. He was no longer the person she had once known, he was a merciless killer, and that couldn’t be changed. She clenched the knife in her hand tighter; she would kill him. She would keep her word and avenge all of those deaths.
As soon as the shadows let go of her, she plunged the knife into him. The bloody hole in his body quickly healed. She kept stabbing him, sending blood everywhere as he stood there, empty eyes as emotionless as ever.
Kei was panting, covered in the blood of her best friend, enemy, opponent. He was still standing there, staring off, trying to comprehend what was happening.
“Kei…”
He said nothing else and stared her straight in the eye. She didn’t even flinch, determination in her stare. He backed away.
“Why do you hate me?” he asked, “Is there no way to make you love me?”
“I could never do that; you are too ruthless, I couldn’t.”
He back away even more.
“It wasn’t me, it was them.”
“You mean Akuhei?”
He visibly cringed.
“D-d-don’t say that, please.”
“It was all you Shai, all you. It wasn’t their fault, you are the true evil. You used your power for evil, for bad, and I could never care for anyone like that.”
“I understand,” he said.
The shadow took the knife out of her hand, bringing it over to him.
“Then I guess I will die then; there is no longer a reason for me to keep living.”
And slowly, cold darkness enveloped the weapon.
“Goodbye.”
He plunged it deep into himself, the hilt disappearing into his being. In moments, his screams rang inside the metal room and his dead corpse fell to the ground.
She walked over to it, not even amazed at how he was able to do it. It didn’t matter, he was dead; that was all that mattered. Yet, it felt so wrong now that he was dead.
Tears streamed down her face as she knelt down by the dead body of her friend, tears falling onto his corpse as it began to melt into the shadow.
Did she make the right choice? He was gone, and she was unexpectedly overwhelmed with guilt. But he was dead, and that was that.
She walked away, out of the room to contact headquarters to tell them that she had completed her mission. Her head was not held high; she wasn’t proud of what she did, but still wasn’t sorry that he was dead.

A/N: I haven't been on this site for a LONG time... Anyway, I found this hidden in my computer and I felt like posting it. Originally, it was a oneshot for my friend's birthday, in March. Normally, I despise romance, but it was a present after all... Well, tell me what you think
