The Solution to the War in Iraq

Everyone knows that the war in Iraq is bad. Everyone knows the war shouldn’t continue. Yet it continues to rage on, four years after it began. The question is: why?

Here’s what the politicians are thinking. If we leave Iraq, the Shiites and the Sunnis will start a civil war that could expand to other places. Sounds bad, right?

How much do you know about earthquakes? Earthquakes are natural disasters, but they happen because the tectonic plates in the Earth need to get more comfortable, otherwise worse may happen.

Apply that to the Iraq situation. America leaves, they fight. Well, what happens if the Americans don’t leave?

They fight anyway, except the anger for the Americans will rise by so much that by the time America does leave, the insurgents will be looking for vengeance.

Oops, too late.

So what now? We leave, they kill each other. We don’t leave; they kill each other and then turn on us.

Did I mention the politics behind leaving? We leave; the countries will get a different perception of America.

America: The nation that abandoned people who needed help.

I’m guessing that’s what Bush thinks will happen if we leave before the conflict is resolved.

Resolved? What is resolved? We beat all the insurgents and leave as heroes? Not going to happen. It’s impossible to defeat the insurgents. They’re everywhere around the world. Nothing’s going to change their minds.

It’s all over history. Great Britain invades North America and gets pummeled by the minutemen of colonial America. Napoleon invades Europe and is essentially defeated. Alexander the Great conquers the same area and fails when he dies. Japan invaded China and got pushed out after World War 2. Germany didn’t do well either, with the UK, USA and Russia attacking it from all sides. Even the USA invaded areas, twice failing in Korea and Vietnam.

What I’m trying to say is: Every time a country invades a place, they ultimately get pushed out. It’s just impossible to hold a hostile area for long; therefore I see it fairly foolish to go invade some random Middle Eastern country with known terrorists and expect to win in a few months. Of course, I was ten years-old when the war started.

What I think the US should do is pull out most of their troops and try to convince the United Nations to send peacekeeping forces to Iraq. People from different countries should work together to end this conflict, and not refuse just because they don’t believe in the war. We should prevent World War III, and solve this together.

This is indeed a sticky situation.
