Life Before the Hunt

Who gave me the thrill from the killing of work?
I rendered my success as the collar on my shirt
Remember back when the sidewalk was news?
And you never even heard of booze or fuck-me boots?

Hey, it's back before the collapse of black cats and bike racks
A slight of hand, an eyelash, tape tracks and high hats
This was well before you had a clock hanging from your neck
When you heaved nice laughs and you didn't tally sex

It's life before the hunt- before they told you how to die
And you cry cause it's ironic and you don't know why
It'll leave you in a minute- there's no point in keeping time
Life's about the pseudo-answers, and the pseudo's working fine

You need to learn how to breathe and you learn how to smile
And now it's all about rebuilding, and you doing it with style
Feeling higher all the while you're just picking at some tired
Piece of fuck dogging slag you empower with denial

Who's the first one in the back to say "fit in?"
Life's all about what's missing, it's nature, it's fission
Those trapped behind the dirty glass become your only business
Your worldview's all global, forget the fuck about the message

You can't wish this away, that's what dead men do
You're scholarly, spiky holes to bang them through
You're educated, more poverty to hang yourself to
You're hard, you're street, cause you paid them to

We all die remembered, or forgot and live forever
In an intellectual climate that's as passive as the weather
Consumers trained to talk and then the losers paid to think
It's a self fulfilling prophecy; can't finish this thing better.
