Ashes

The silence of sleep lies still in our room
Suspended thoughts so remote from the lives we assume
The warmth of the shadows, the haze in the air
The sound of your breathing, dark curls in your hair
I draw roses on my skin
In the dusty dawn light
With powder from the incense
We burned through the night.

In my dream you were flying, as I watched from the ground
With your silver wings shining and sky all around
When I woke you were crying, and we both must know why;
I could not catch you when you fell from the sky
Because these roses are ashes
And smoke’s in the air
But the flames are inside us,
And they’ll always be there.
