"Best Friend"

On the first day,

I have everything planned.

Everything’s ready.

I’ll just pretend

She’s a touch of wind,

I’ll pretend she’s not really there,

And her words will wisp by me,

And leave a smirk on my face.

I walk to my first class,

And I see her:

She sees me.

She’s screaming my name,

Running towards me,

Her arms stretched out,

And I can’t help but

Stretch out my arms too,

So as not to get

Completely squished.

She starts talking

And I can’t look away.

I have to look straight into her eyes,

Mesmerized.

She says I’m her

Best friend.

I really don’t want it to,

But it makes me really happy.

She says something about a party.

Talking on about it,

And I happen to

Get the hint,

From the way she whispers,

That it’s not something

We could just walk

Past the teachers with.

I want to say no.

I want to say I’m not that type,

I don’t do that sort of thing.

And I feel myself

Choke on the words,

I feel myself going pale,

And she’s looking at me strangely,

Waiting.

I nod once.

That’s all she needs.

She walks away,

Hooking up with her

“real friends”

She knows I’ll

Steal the liquor

From my parents.

She knows I’ll

Do all the stuff

I told her I would.

I’m her best friend right?

That’s what best friends do.
