DancingKitsune

My family is odd.

“MOM!! I can’t find my mascara!!” I hear my brother Leon scream from up in our shared room, all the way on the third floor. Yes, I did say and mean brother, though I sometimes wonder if I should still consider him so anymore.

I look over at my mother in a slightly amused fashion. She’s simply rolling her bright green eyes in humor as she continues to fold our family’s freshly washed-- and dried, of course—clothes, and doesn’t look like she’s going to do anything about my brother’s newest dilemma.

She tucks some of her long, dyed, dark red hair behind her ears, “Have you checked you and Azrael’s bathroom?” she shouts up to him. I can hear some muffled banging, which I assume is him throwing open the door and rummaging through our bathroom. After a while, there’s complete silence. Mom and I start cracking up.

“I can hear you!” he shouts from our room. We both know that he can’t hear us from all the way up there. While people of my family are known to be obnoxious laugher’s, we definitely aren’t obnoxious enough to be heard from where Leon was. I know that he could feel my humor from the connection that him and I share from being twins.

It’s odd, really. We’re identical in every way. At sixteen, we have long, chestnut brown hair, sky blue eyes, rather thin and curved figures, and natural genius. Identical in every single way. Except personality.

Personality leads me to not caring that my hair is curly naturally and just pulling it back into a simple high ponytail while long bangs frame the sides of my face. Personality leads to me wearing band shirts, jeans, and an old pair of sneakers. Personality leads to me liking the world of science and the world of music-- even though I can’t sing a not in tune for the life of me. Personality leads me to like mainly girls, while sometimes those feminine boys caught my eye.

But Leon was very different. Personality leads him to having long, side-swept bangs that reached the tip of his nose and often covered his eyes, while his long, artificially straightened hair was pulled up into high pigtails at the top of his head. Personality leads him into a liking of wearing women’s clothing and accessories like makeup. Personality leads him to liking sports like soccer and track along with acting-- even if some of those meant that he had to dress like a boy sometimes. Personality also leads him to like other guys, and strictly so.

Completely identical in every way, yet absolutely nothing alike.

An explosion from the second floor startles me out of my musing and mom from her folding. What sounded much like the stampede in the gorge from that old Disney classic ‘The Lion King’ came from the steps, then quickly followed by three people bursting into the room, all shouting like mad at once.

“I had nothing to do with it!” the first one, my younger brother by two years, Gabriel, shouted. He had his hands thrown up into the air as if a gun was being shoved into his face. His long, straight, light brown hair-- that fell over his shoulders was tucked behind his ears that had large white gold hoops hanging from them-- looked slightly burnt at the ends and seemed shorter than it had been earlier. His face, white tee, and green-white-red plaid pants also looked somewhat dirty, as if covered in a thin layer of ash.

“He blew up my wall!” the second one, my younger sister by eight years, Sabriel, shouted. Her arm was thrown out as she pointed accusingly at Gabriel looking extremely angered. Her long, thick, and usually golden hair-- with normal bangs and naturally curved in side pieces-- was looking more like brown right now as it was pulled into pigtails like Leon’s usually was. Her lime green tank-top, deep blue shorts, skin, and socks looked much like how Gabriel’s did.

“Where’s the fire extinguisher?!” the third one, the son of a family-friend, Artemis, shouted. He then ran a hand through his hair in an annoyed fashion and sighed as the two siblings started bickering between each other, going so far as to shoving and wrestling with each other, bumping into him a few times. His brown hair was sort of shaggy and went about halfway down his neck and seemed pretty clean compared to the other two. His white tee-shirt and jeans that had rips at the knees were in a similar fashion.

As the two continued bickering and fighting with each other, a boy walked in through the door without even knocking. “Hi Misses Inverse! Hey Az! Hey--" the boy started, then stopped mid-wave to us all when he noticed the three ash-covered persons. “Do I even want to know?” He asked me and I shook my head and laughed some.

Nathaniel, Leon’s boyfriend of three years now, was an alright guy. He had black wavy hair with a naturally blonde chunk in the front as a form of birthmark that came almost to his shoulders. He had dark brown-- almost black—eyes and wore thick rimmed reading glasses that were tinted a light blue. He was shorter than the normal 16 year old by a few inches, and had a love for layering shirts and cargo jeans. He was a rather meek person who didn’t like to draw attention to himself all that much, which is odd seeing how he’s dating my brother who practically screams ‘attention’ with his outfit preference.

“He’s upstairs, getting ready.” My mom tells him, and then goes over to try to pry my two younger siblings from each other for their own sakes with a sigh. He nods, and then heads up to see Leon. He was followed by Xander, Artemis’ sister and Leon’s best friend since they were babies.

Xander, whose actual name was Alexandria, was a tough 16 year old girl which looked like all of the other thin tomboys that you passed by between classes. Her brown eyes were almost always serious or sarcastic, and she had dirty blonde hair that naturally faded black by the time it reached the tips that was short all around aside from the two long pieces that were by her ears, a memento from when her hair was once long back when we were all younger. She was wearing a pair of tan cargo shorts with her jersey thrown over a black tee-shirt. She was very sporty and competitive with a lot of spirit, and was even on our schools’ football team as a quarterback.

A quick ‘yo’ from both Xander and Artemis was exchanged as she ran up the stairs and he went into the kitchen to find the extinguisher that mom said was suppose to be in there.

Soon everything cleared up. Leon and his friends went out (with my brother sporting a collarless, striped shirt that wrapped around his shoulder sides in all its dark blue glory with a pleated, blue-grey-black plaid skirt that he probably stole off of some catholic school girl, black leggings that went down to his calves, and his very “Lolita-like” black dress shoes) to go see some new movie after bumming money from mom. Gabriel and Artemis went to Gabriel’s room to fix whatever chaos that they had unleashed. Sabriel went to go get Uncle Rob, who wasn’t really our uncle, from down the street so that he could fix her wall. Mom went upstairs to clean up, seeing how Gabriel and Sabriel had managed to get ash all over her once vividly rainbow striped long sleeved shirt and her once baby blue jeans.

And me? I just went back to reading some old book called Harry Potter (and the prisoner of some-place-that-I-can’t-seem-to-say-right) that was ‘a smash with all the teens’ when mom was younger. Honestly, that one character that seems like a bad guy (but really isn’t) is my favorite one. I love reading old books like this series.

As I fall back into my story, somewhere in the back of my mind I can’t help but note the fact that my family and friends were odd.

Very odd, indeed…

DK: So, this is the introducing chapter for my story called INVERSE that I share with a few of my friends. I wanted to describe a lot of the main characters from INVERSE, and I covered alot of the teenage characters so I feel rather accomplished (I think, haha).
