Scribble

I drew a heart today, accidentally. I was trying to get my pen to work. I scribbled for a few seconds before the ink started flowing properly again. One oblong shape, then another formed and joined as I rubbed ball-point against wrinkled looseleaf. Pulling the pen away from the paper, I realized the odd shaped I absently drew looked very much like a heart.

I almost laughed it off, almost. But there was something about the pointless doodle that kept me from balling up the wasted piece of paper. In fact, I couldn't stop staring at it.

And then you vaulted over the sofa and sat beside me. I leaned forward as you reached behind me, around me, shamelessly stealing a few of my cooling McDonald's fries. I noticed you looking toward my paper, the heart and the words I had started to jot down to voice my thoughts on the silly scrawl, and quickly hid what I was doing under my hand. I couldn't glare at you for invading my privacy; your pout was too cute and your eyes meeting mine made my blood run cold. Your eyes are so beautiful – they're my favorite part of you. So it came as no surprise to me that your gaze momentarily paralyzed me.

Then you brought your hand up and reached out. In my imagination, you pulled me up against you, but in reality you simply reached passed me and for another handful of fries.

Looking back down to the paper on the binder on my lap, I stared at the doodled heart again because it was better than staring at you. The lines were so erratic and all-over-the-place, and then it hit me, then I thought, this is how you make me feel
