Just Your Average Everyday Ghoul
Note: A bit of a children’s tale, told in rhyme by Ima Soveryscari about how her life differs from the days of those of the living, and how she lives around the world of the living and how being dead can have its perks.
My name is Ima Soveryscari
It is so nice to meet you
Though I admit I might seem different
There’s no reason to be wary.
True, although I am a ghoul
Which gives humans a sense of dread
Please do not fear me, I mean no harm
Especially since I am dead.
But you among the living might ask,
“Ima, what do you do ?”
Why, I live and breathe, but in the land of the undead
Doing things that you mortals do.
I go to school to learn how to scare
Though I never do so to be mean
If a soul is in trouble or unprepared
I show them the ropes and lay the scene.
The land of the undead can be tricky
Because it isn’t like your human realm at all
And to an undead soul it can be lonely
So rather he prefers friends than none at all.
You might as me, Ima, why scare school ?
Isn’t that something obscene ?
Well, my dear friends, not at all,
Sit back and you’ll see what I mean.
We learn all we can to scare and frighten
But we do more than that, we also enlighten
Some think we are evil, but that’s not true
Have you ever known the undead to do something cruel ?
Don’t believe the hype you may see
From the B-movie screen
Those monsters aren’t factual
That’s plain to be seen.
But beyond all of this, we exist in harmony
Between your world and ours
Without causing calamity.
But again I hear you ask what I love the most
And I must confess, as I lift a Halloween toast
That my favorite time of year is the Feast of Sam Hain
I become giddy and light when it begins again.
I cannot help myself, it melts eons off of me
It makes me feel young, and fancy-free.
I know it seems cliché,
But it’s like Christmas for me
It’s our time of the year to shine
And live a little frivolously.
So although it extends into the Day of the Dead
It feels far too soon gone
And again I feel dread.
But it’s not always so bad, since I have my duties to do
I have many friends by my side, old souls and new
It makes undead life easier, of that I can attest
And much less lonely, let me tell you !
But I go throughout my day, with hobbies to keep me occupied
Playing with trains, cars, dolls and toys much to my delight
This is done after scare school has released
It’s really not so bad being newly deceased.
So the next time you feel dread or fear
Do not worry, because a friend is here
I am a helper to all I meet,
Young, old, tall, short, strong and weak.
If you need me, just call upon my name
And don’t be frightened when I appear in gusts of flame
It’s simply my entrance, it’s a bit dramatic
Some douse me with extinguishers; how anticlimactic !
I am friend to all who call my name
But at the dawn, I must return from whence I came
We ghouls, goblins and ghost must sleep at the dawn
We roam at night when the sun’s rays are gone.
But whenever you are in need,
Or just need someone to play with
Just call my name,
Maybe I’ll take you on a trip !
No worries, though, you’ll return back home
I know humans shouldn’t roam the unknown.
I hope to meet you someday soon
You’ll know me by my shriek
Just promise…You won’t swoon !
