Author’s Notes:
This was inspired when I was traveling with my family and I looked up into a trucker’s face. Written January 3, 2005.
What do people see,
When they look upon my face?
When thy look into my eyes?
Do they see a mere stranger,
Without a thought to my name?
Or do they wonder where I’ve been?
What I’ve done?
What I know?
Do they ever try
To put themselves in my shoes?
Do they ever guess at my name?
Where I am going?
What I will do?
What I will learn?
Do they think about my life?
A better question by far.
What do I see,
When I look upon your face?
Or if I look right into your eyes?
Will I see a mere stranger?
Will I give a thought to your name?
Will I wonder where you’ve been?
What you’ve done?
What you know?
Will I try on your shoes?
Will I think of a name that fits you?
Or think of where you might go?
What you might do?
Or what you might learn?
Will I think about your life?
Or lastly...
Would it be worth my time to try?
