More Like Mercutio
You would think I would compare him to Romeo for trying to woo me with sweetness and romance. He knows it’s not his nature but he tries, yet I can see the truth. He’s more like Mercutio.
Mercutio was Romeo’s buddy in Shakespeare’s play but we all know the truth. He would‘ve been the same on either side. He wasn’t very nice with that whole ‘a plague on both your houses’ thing. I wouldn’t have expected less though. I mean, Romeo was a lovesick fool who couldn’t control his hormones. He was a sissy who thought he was a pimp. If he ever had a girlfriend it was because of his ‘saint seducing gold’. You know what I mean, he was moneybags and them girls needed cash. Even Juliet saw the truth. Shakespeare was no idiot, and he definitely knew what he was doing. The man was a genius but I still don’t like Romeo. I would prefer a Benvolio. He’s in the middle. He’s the peacekeeper and all that jazz. Mercutio is too prone to change and Romeo is an idiot. Juliet…was a bit of a minx but she got stupid and got caught. Honestly, I would have just gone for a walk and never came back. I admit the potion trick was genius but Shakespeare didn’t create it. Shakespeare created Mercutio. All because of Mr. Christopher Marlowe. Mercutio, now that’s a guy who I can relate to. ‘A visor for a visor’. Yeah, I can definitely relate to that.
It’s not that I don’t like him, it’s that it would be boring. Opposites attract, right? Well, if I can relate then it wouldn’t be much of being opposites. Where would the excitement be? Where would the surprise be? Of course, if I hadn’t opened my trap I wouldn’t be in this predicament. This predicament is being in a bet. Oh yes, a bet. It all started at Lunch. I was talking with my friends about Shakespeare. What can you expect from an Honors English student? Anyway, I was thoroughly explaining why I didn’t like Romeo. The guy says breast or bosom ever other line for crying out loud! He was standing next to me. I was purposefully ignoring him like always. My friends just laughed at these moments. I was reciting some well known lines from Act 2, Scene 2 when he cut in.
“Why don’t you like Romeo? Or do you like Capulets over Montagues?” I don’t converse with him. I like to save my words. My sentences to him are as short as possible.
“He’s an idiot. No.” I looked at Melanie with a ‘make him go away’ look. Of course, she just laughed harder. She wouldn’t have succeeded in making him flee anyway. She likes to torture me. The more he’s near me, the more she loves it.
“So, you would look at yourself as Juliet?” I shrugged.
“I prefer Rosaline but whatever.” Rosaline didn’t fall for Romeo’s crap. Rosaline might be a ice queen as depicted in the old film but she was smart. I slid a glance to my friends who were watching. I know I have friends who care when they don’t do crap to help me in my time of need for my sake. Or so they say.
“Ah, but prick love for pricking. So, I would have to show you it’s not right to be so cruel to Romeo.” I scoffed.
“Now thou art Mercutio and a Montague?” I thought I outsmarted him. Damn my pride. It will be my downfall.
“Neither, fair saint, if either thee dislike.” He replied swiftly. I think my face said it all. I was shocked. How was I supposed to know he read Shakespeare? Meanwhile my friends were gagging-no-giggling because of their romantic/diabolic sides emerging. I wish they were gagging but alas my luck is not with me. I could die right now. Now would be a good time to strike me with lightning, God.
“Ay, dislike dost not measure the feeling.” He raised an eyebrow.
“Would thou be willing to bet?” I narrowed my eyes. I didn’t know what to conclude about the proposal. Would it be bad or would it be good. Damn me for being a gambler. I risked it.
“Ay, what would be thy terms?”
“Thou wilst accompany me to the dance if I win. If I lose I’ll leave you alone. For the rest of the school year.” What went through my mind first was: THE REST OF THE SCHOOL YEAR!!!! Bing bing bing!!! Then the dance thing hit me.
“What wilst thou have to do?” He smiled.
“Prove to you that you do like Mercutio.”
A/N: Hmm...yeah. This was a draft from long ago when I was a wee freshman. And yes, I know the ending doesn't make sense because she was comparing him to Romeo and such but let's just say he can read minds. Mmkay? Or that he really knows her to the point of it being scary. Well R+R. PEACE.
