Alexander the Great

“Betty!” He yelled his voice was filled with anger and misery.

“Argg, What do you want Alex? I need to get to class.” She threw the words in his face, not even considering his feelings.

He finally caught up to her in the hallway. “Oh sorry, I just...” He stuttered. “I just wanted to say hi, sorry ill go.” He spat the last part out and ran off.

“God, he’s such a little geek.” She shared with a nearby friend.

Ring, ring, the bell went off. The kids entered their classrooms.

“Welcome Kids, today we will be doing algebra.” The teacher announced.

The teacher rambled on, talking about exponents and variables. Betty didn’t care what the teacher was saying or even what class it was. She wasn’t the school type, she spent her weekends gossiping, and looking for new guys to cling off of, and her week days didn’t consist of much more then failing, and going to detention.

“Betts, like who was the dweeb in the hall? Like honestly, what a total geek.” Melissa asked. Melissa, she was the clone. Always dressed, spoke, and acted as if she was Betty’s twin.

“Uhh, I dunno, some loser.” She answered fast, as if she was hiding something important.

“It sounded like he knew you?” Melissa wasn’t thinking at this point, she forgot who she was talking too.

“Don’t be stupid Mel, why would I know that dork?” Betty was getting annoyed at Melissa’s questions.

"Girls, do you wanna pass math? If not get out." The teacher, interrupted.

“Mm, what ever.” Melissa whispered, she picked the bitchiness in Betty’s voice, and shut up.

“Betty.” Melissa tried again, after a bit.

“Shut up Mel.” Betty’s voice was firm and serious.

Ring, ring, the bell rang once again, finishing third period. It was the beast bell, it meant it was lunch time.

Alex walked into the cafeteria, and spotted Betty sitting with her friends, he didn’t care he just really wanted to talk to her. He plopped his lunch on the table and said. “Betty, hi, could we talk.”

“What do you think, Freak.” Her answer was fast and like before, it was obviously she meant to hurt him.

“But, Betts.” That was the first time in awhile he summed up to call her Betts again, only special people where privileged with that choice. “Please, please talk to me.” He was practically in tears, at this point.

She got up from the table.

“Betty, this isn’t working out.” He was confused to why, for what reason, he was stuck in this mess. He normally knew right from wrong.

She threw a few left over pennies at him and stormed off. The cafeteria went up in, “Burn!’s” and immature laughter. His face turned beat red, she soon disappeared behind a corner.

He was alone the rest of lunch, till art class. He had one friend in there, his teacher. She was always very nice and supportive of him and his art. Pulling high 90’s was a synch for him.

Art was just art, he didn’t have to think or pay attention, he just had to do what he did best. The best class in school, but today it was different.

“Hi, the name’s Alyssa, what’s yours?” said a girl who was sitting beside him. She waited for an answer. “Hmm, no name, I guess? I’m new here, seems like a fun school. I love art, I would ask you but I have a feeling you won’t answer.” She paused, stared at his eyes, looking to see if there was any emotion at all. “You seem sad.” Her smile turned to a slight frown. “Why? Please talk to me, I have no friends yet.”

There was no answer, not even a small gesture.

She gave up and looked back to her drawing. She was a beautiful girl. She was short; pocket sized. Her hair was long and lustrous, lively, smooth skin. Her teeth were white as snow, and had the perfect little smile.

“Sorry I need to… a… a.” He stuttered, as if he was tripping over ever hurdle, in a track and field meet. “Have to go…” He got out of his seat and flew out the door, before she could say anything.

“Excuse me, Ms. could I go get a drink of water?” Alyssa asked the teacher.

“Of course, be fast.” The teacher was too busy marking to even look up, or notice that she was missing a student.

Alyssa, didn’t go to the water fountain but looked, around each nearby corner.

“Ha, I knew I would be able to fine you. Come on, its ok, I wont bite.” She sat done next to the boy, and looked into his eyes.

“I… my name is Alex.” Hi voice shivered with the rest of his body.

“Hehe, I like that name, I hate mine. I dunno why, just do.” She wouldn’t stop and leave him alone. “So, what are you working on in class? From what I saw it looked very good.”

“Its hell, the skeletons in the background are…” He stopped to get his sketch book out. “See, those are skeletons, being swept away, for a second chance. And this one is praying for a second chance.” His voice cleared up and was much stronger now. He pointed to the smudges, “if you look hard enough, that’s fire and smoke, for a hell like look.” He looked up at her, he noticed she wasn’t fixed on his drawing but on him, he looked down fast. “Maybe we should get back to class?”

They both stood up and walked towards the art room.

“I’m glad we met Alex, you’re my friend here.” She looked at her feet, to hide her rosy cheeks.

Ring, ring, Art was over.

“Yah, good to have met you, I’ll see you around.” He rubbed the back of his neck and walked away.

Alex was in a good mood for the rest of the day. His two last periods went by fast, and hardly noticeable.

“Alex! Get your butt back here, now!” Betty was standing right behind him. “I’ve been told that you were with some new girl today in art. Who is she? What’s her name? You know you can’t jut go and hang with some girl, when you’re not exactly single.

“What are you talking about!? Betty, you treat me like dirt! And I'm sick and tried of it!” it was his turn to have no mercy.

“Excuse me? Don’t you run your mouth with me Alex, you know with out me you would be a social wreck.” She wasn’t very merciful herself either.

“Pfft! I don’t need you, your just Betty Thomason, not queen on the world.” He started to walk away.

“Don’t even think ab…” She started at him.

“What?” he interrupted.

“out it,” she finished.

“What are you gonna do slap me? You broke my heart Betty, treated me like dirt, and I don’t need it, I did nothing to deserve this horrible treatment.” They were standing face to face, nose to nose, eye to eye.

Swak! She slapped him across the face, leaving a big read mark on his cheek, as red as Alyssa’s cheeks after art. He stud there, didn’t even flinch.

“Yah, about that much pain, but inside to the heart.” He stared her down, to a little, coward she was.

She stormed off in tears.

The next afternoon, Alex accomplished a few things he had never done before. He kissed his first kiss, he asked out his first real girlfriend, and found himself, Alexander the Great.
