Pretend

--

She smiles and pretends that she isn’t crying inside.

He stands before her and tells her about the love of his life. She is pretty; she is sweet; she is intelligent; she is funny; she is perfect. He is in love, and he can’t wait to speak with her again, because it will just make his day.

She laughs and pretends that her heart isn’t breaking.

He has been dating her for months, and he is still very much in love with her. She smiles and flirts and laughs with him, and it makes him feel good. And he always looks forward to their next dates, because he knows that he will have fun, because she just makes his day.

She congratulates and pretends that she isn’t broken.

He and she are getting married, and he can’t be any happier. His heart is going to burst with the joy, and he can’t get over how pretty and nice and smart and funny she still is. She can still make his pulse quicken and his heart beat faster, and she still knows how to make him laugh. She will always be there for him, and it just makes his day.

She hugs and pretends that she doesn’t wish to freeze this moment.

He doesn’t notice that she isn’t spending very much time with him anymore. He is too wrapped up in her to notice that she is slowly drifting away. It’s almost like she doesn’t matter to him anymore, because he is distracted by her beauty and intelligence and kindness and the way that she makes him laugh. He doesn’t need her anymore, because she makes his day.

She loves and pretends that it isn’t killing her.

He has children with her, and they have her smile and her sense of humor and her intelligence and her kindness, and nothing of his. He doesn’t care, though, because he likes the way that she is, and he has his own perfect little family now, and that’s all that matters to him. And she still makes him laugh and smile, and she still makes his day.

She cries and laughs and smiles and breaks all because of him. She wants him to be happy, though, and doesn’t tell him. Because, with him, she always pretends, and it doesn’t bother her so much, because she knows that it helps to make his day.

AN: Yes. Well, I decided that life’s not always so happy-go-lucky—some things don’t turn out, even for the good people. So I decided to write this, to show that it’s true, that life’s not always a bunch of roses—bad things do happen, and people are heartbroken, and they don’t always have happy endings.

So yes. I hope you enjoyed, and if not—well, thanks for reading and giving it a chance, anyway : )
