Broken through the sun light

I walk a different man

Once born and branded

With the destiny of work and pain

--

But now—upon a new day

I rise a new citizen

One with the capturers

Who brought me into darkness

--

However, though I am out of the cage

I am still tied to the fence with ropes

I can see the light

And wait for the ties to break

This was a history assignment from last year, my Junior year. I had to write a poem from the perspective of a Freedman, so I'm not a guy. Just to let you know. I could have written it from a woman's perspective but it was easier to write this.
