Will you marry me?”

I always figured I’d get married eventually. I had it all played out in my head. Late 20’s, we’d have a cat and a dog. He would be on his way to become a successful doctor…a HOT successful doctor at that. I would be a photographer, but when we would have our baby--a girl named Delilah, I’d take off to stay home with her. Everyday when I was 12, I would sit at the bottom of my bed and pray for those things to happen. I was an odd little child, a hopeless romantic. As I got older, I hoped that Garrett would be that one. And as cheesy as all this sounds, I thank God he never answered those prayers.

“Lily, I know this isn’t going to be easy. We’ve jumped through a lot of hoops, and I’m sure there will be more to come, but if anyone can make it, it’s us. I love you and I can’t stay away from you. We’ve seen how that turned out. Just…are you going to say something? You’re torturing me. We can live here, we can move if you want. Redecorate. I don’t care. Hell, I’ll move to Antarctica with you…and the penguins…”

“Kyle,” I said softly, as my eyes teared up, “yes. Yes, I’ll marry you.”

He gave me a smile. “Really?”

“Of course silly,” I whispered as I sat up. “Did ya really think I was going to say no?”

Kyle gave me a goofy smile. “Well, I know I’m hard to resist…but with all that’s going on, I didn’t know if you really wanted to be with me. With the Scarlett situation, and all.”

“Scarlett can kiss my ass. I’m not letting her ruin this thing I got right here,” I said smiling.

“I don’t really have a ring right now, but uh..” Kyle looked around the kitchen, before standing up and grabbing a noodle off my plate.

“Kyle, you’re not really going--”

Before I could finish he wrapped the noodle around my ring finger. I gave him a questioning look.

“Okay, it seemed to work out a lot better in my head.” he said as he took it off.

I shook my head at him, laughing.

“You still really want to marry me? He asked.

“I was sure I wanted to, but then you wrapped that noodle around me--”

“THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID!” Kyle yelled.

I rolled my eyes. “I absolutely love you.” I said as I cupped his chin. “Don’t ever think anything different. Scarlett and the baby aren’t going to affect our relationship. I promise. And I don’t want you worrying about that anymore.”

“I just don’t need anymore catty girl fights around here. You won’t have to see Scarlett if you don’t want to, I’ll arrange it that way. The baby is in my life, but that’s it. Scarlett isn’t.

I gave him a weak smile. “Baby, she’s always going to be in your life, but I’m fine with it. I mean, I’m not jumping for joy, but I knew what I was going to have to deal with her when I got back together with you. Dealing with her, it’s worth it. Who knows, maybe we’ll be come best friends forever!” I said sarcastically.

“So,” busted out Kyle. “Whatta want to do now? Have sex? I haven‘t asked anyone to marry me before. It‘s all new territory.”

“You’re such a dork!” I said laughing. “How about we just cuddle?” I walked over to the couch.

Kyle’s face dropped just a little bit. “Or that. Whatever‘s cool.”

“Lily…Lily…LILY!”I jumped up to see Kyle standing above me, keys in hand.

“Where are you going?”

“Scarlett called. She’s at the hospital. I’ll call you when I know more information.”

“Wait!” I said, still half-asleep. “I wanna go.”

“You do?” Kyle asked, shocked.

Wait, what did I just say?

“Uh…yeah. Let’s go.”

As we drove to the hospital, I couldn’t feel…well, almost jealous. I had gotten engaged, and once again Scarlett had to have something more important happen.

Scarlett was going to have a baby. With Kyle. My Kyle. My fiancé.

Would that make the baby my…step-child? I was going to be a step-mother?

“Kyle, this baby is going to be my step-child.”

“And I’m sure you’ll be a fabulous mother. Don’t worry.”

“Step-mother,” I corrected.

“What?”

“You said mother. I would be it’s step-mother,” I said.

“Oh,” he murmured. “yes. You’ll be a great step-mother, either way.”

When we walked into the hospital. I sat down in the waiting room.

“Keep me updated, okay?” I told Kyle.

“I will. Love you.”

Hours passed. People walked in and out, smiles and frowns, hugs of joy and hugs of sadness. Finally, after 6 hours, Kyle emerged from behind the heavy doors.

“Is everything okay?” I asked.

Kyle had a huge smile on his face. “It’s a boy!”

“Kyle, that’s great!”

He grabbed my arm. “Come on.”

I followed him to Scarlett’s room. It was like watching a kid in a candy store, almost running into people, talking non-stop about what happened.

“You’re going to be a great dad,” I told him as we reached her room. And that was the truth. He loved kids, he was funny, and was willing to do anything. I just wished he would be a great dad with me.

“Kyle, I think he wants you,” said Scarlett as we walked in.

“What did you name him?” I asked politely, trying to be civil.

“Emmett. Emmett Alexander,” she replied proudly.

“That’s very beautiful,” I said with a smile.

Kyle looked at me. “I have to call my dad. I’ll be back, okay?” I gave him a nod, and sat down in a chair.

“I heard about the engagement,” said Scarlett as Kyle walked out. “Congratulations.”

It was so weird, actually being civil to Scarlett. I almost felt that I would be able to be around her without slapping her.

“Thanks. I appreciate it.”

She laughed. “It won’t be long before you’ll be popping out one of your own, now will it?”

“I hope not!” I said with a smirk.

Suddenly, Scarlett sighed. “I can’t do this anymore. I'm a horrible person, and you don't deserve this.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

As Kyle walked back in, Scarlett sat up.

“Kyle…I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kept this from you. I just knew if I told you, I’d lose you. I was willing to keep you in any way, and I’m sorry.”

“What?” he asked. “Is Emmett okay?”

He looked at Emmett with concerned eyes.

“Kyle, this baby…it isn’t yours.”

A/N: Okay, so I could talk about how I’m in AP classes, including APUSH (ugh!), how I’m also in two clubs and three bands at school and how that’s eating up all my time, but I won’t. But really, there was no excuse for this delay and I’m mucho sorry. A lot of it was writer’s block. I’m not really fond of this chapter, I had a hard time with it. However, I definitely have some ideas for the next few chapters.

Also, in trying to get over my writer’s block, I started a Twilight fanfic. It’s Emmett/Rosalie based, but we’ll eventually see everyone. Check it out! The link is in my profile. The story is called Eyes on Fire, and my penname is falsifiedsunlite.
