I missed him more than ever last night, but then he was there(same one as in The Itch), so it was okay, for a moment. He's insanely attractive, and looks slightly like the guy I'm still in love with. -sigh- Oh yeah, I know this has a ton of capital "and"s and "but"s but I like it that way. :) Review please! Set to the Quietdrive cover of 'Time After Time', their version is better, imo. This will also be part of TP when I get there.
She’s standing in the concession–stand line with Nora as she listens faintly to the older girl prattle on about something that Katie hadn’t caught minutes earlier. She does the obligatory nods, and smiles, and “uh-huh” and “aw, yeah” of agreement though, only half listening as she watches Nora’s glittering green eyes lit up and a smile grace her face because she thinks Katie’s listening to her. She feels bad, really she does, but this is just one of those nights that the memories and hopes are just too strong for her to focus.
He’s everywhere. Or at least it seems that way. She feels the warm breeze on the back of her neck and for a moment she thinks he’s behind her, but when she turns around it’s just some sophomore looking at her like she was an idiot. And she was, because she just couldn’t let go. Not yet.
She looks up at the stars, staring at the celestial lights, slightly rolling her eyes as tears threaten to overtake her. She just wants to be done with this. She needs it to be done. And she feels bad when Nora looks at her quizzically, not understanding why she’s drawing a shaky breath and staying quiet, it’s because she wants him here.
As Nora looks the other way she manages a soft “I miss him so much” that she mutters into the darkness and hopes that Nora doesn’t hear, and when Nora turns around again her stare is as blank as it had been before so Katie knows she’s safe. Nora didn’t understand how much she was hurting anyway, but that was no fault of her own.
They get their drinks and Katie’s slammed back into her own little world as they walk back to the bleachers. It’s too hard, she thinks, as she nears the benches. He was here, just moments ago, with her; laughing, talking, being. But she knows it was really months ago and now he’s not here and she’s hurting without him.
On the way she runs into several of the alumni that she missed so much, but when they ask her how she’s doing his face flashes in her mind and she looks at them, carefully gulping and shutting her eyes before opening them again slowly and saying she was fine. At least, she was trying to be.
Then suddenly the whole field is erupting in screams and the football players on the sidelines are rushing over to the far end of the field. She jumps up and down in the air repeatedly, trying to see what’s going on, but she fails, all she knows is that their score just jumped sky high on the board and that’s all that matters.
“I have no idea what just happened, but YES!” She screams, facing Nora and giving her a double-high five. And she notices that the hands she’s holding are soft and cold like her own, not slightly calloused, warm, and slipping through her fingers like she’d hoped, and it’s back to square one.
When halftime’s over she heads back down to the track, restlessly walking around, imagining him in the shadows but knowing he isn’t there. Suddenly she sees his temporary replacement heading towards her and she chokes out a “hi” as blue meet blue and for a moment she forgets how much it hurts not to have him there because he is, and for a moment that’s enough to make her give him a genuine smile and make her heartbeat race in her chest. And for a moment she forgets.
